I use these with my Handpresso portable espresso pump, which requires pods. They work quite well for my needs. I would go as far as recommending for people with convetional espresso makers who don't like dealing with the mess of coffee grounds all over the counter.
I've been drinking these for years at various restaurants, museums, and delis where they only sporadically make coffee (no coffee specialist). While properly ground fresh coffee and a good espresso pump are the way to go, the Illy pods are far better than what a lot of folks, and most restaurants are able to do on their own, with poorly tamped, watery espressos.
