Some may think $60 is a lot for a trash can, but it gives me daily pleasure to use it without needing to push a pedal or touch a lid. It opens and closes flawlessly each time, keeping trash out of sight inside it's attractive shape. I have zero trouble with the ring that holds up the bags inside. I have no difficulty emptying bags once they are filled, but I do not attempt to smash in too much trash, which seems common sense. I have dumped common kitchen trash including empty beer bottles and food cans, etc. I get fair-use from the trash bags I buy, I don't under-fill them, I just don't try to jam them to absolute max!
This is an elegant device to use in the kitchen when preparing food. It is a lovely little bit of pampering to keep things clean and attractive. Think about how often you use the trash! It's worth it!
New info: I was so happy with the one I bought I ordered a smaller one. It must be an older model, and it is far different in quality and function. As I read in other reviews, there is a badly designed inner wire ring that will not hold up plastic bags. The lid is also very inferior and does not open and close well.
Look for the following signs: The old models have an ugly ring shaped indentation near the top of the stainless cylinder. It was meant to create a ledge inside to hold up the wire bag-support ring, but fails to work. This design mars the esthetic value too. The new models go sleekly to the top with no indentation. I think some sellers show the old pictures but do sell the newer designs, but be careful. (Actually, the new manufacturer's box of the good one had the older picture on it, I just checked.)
The newer designs also provide a small finger grip on the opening part of the lid so it may be manually lifted if desired. The older ones are slick and if the power isn't working, it's very hard to lift that slick lid. The sensors on the new ones work very well. The older ones seem erratic and stupid. It seems that the R&D folks didn't have it right for the first versions, but someone took note and made great improvements.
I still think it's a great tool for everyday use, but only the newer versions. The older ones need to be returned, they truly aren't worth it. Do your research, try find out which models are the good versions and try to order only those. I found the 13 gal newer good version on EBay for a good price. I tried to buy the newer 3 gal. one on Amazon, and they sent me a older version, (bad) 8 gal. instead. I will be returning it. I still love my 13 gal. so much I will keep trying to buy the newer version of the 3 gal.!
I feel sorry for those buyers who's experience was with the original poor designs. My first impression would have been totally opposite if that had happened to me. I was lucky! This should explain the wide variation in reviews!
