These mills are not as good mechanically as my previous ones by "La Bella Vita". The grind adjustment mechanism is cheaply made. It's simply a nut on a shaft that does not hold tension on the grinding mechanism as you adjust it. The only better thing about them is they are stainless steel instead of a rubberized coating that wears away. So far they seem to operate pretty much the same but don't feel as sturdy as my previous set. If you're willing to put up with "adjustment nut", these mills seem to be a good buy. I bought these for my parents despite the number of bad reviews - most of which were years old. Bought in June 2009, my parents love them and have not had any problems with them. The battery life has been good and the light (when the mill is grinding) is a great feature! I suspect that the older grinders may have had a design flaw or technical problem. But I can assure you, that the new design/batch, are in perfect working condition. I anticipate to purchase a set for myself soon and may give out as a gift next Christmas.Customer Review: Don't buy this item!

That clear plastic chamber that holds the pepper or salt isn't very sturdy. The set I ordered was broken even before I was able to use it. The amazon shop gave me a refund, which was very nice. Then, I happened across the same set at a big box store. I picked it up and the exact same plastic part was broken in the exact same way my set was broken. This sent all sort of parts rolling around on the floor... there was lots of pointing and laughing. But really, this product isn't made well at ALL! This is a great package. I own one set and have purchased two more for gifts and one more for a friend that just fell in love with it when they used it at our house.
These units work like a charm. The led light is a nice thought.
I don't care much for the small openings where pepper and salt is loaded into the container, but I don't load them often enough to be a problem.
They make for a great conversation piece, though some of our guests are afraid to use them the first time they try...

I'm 69 years old and have bought a lot of junk in my life, but these salt & pepper grinders are garbage. Here's my complaints:
1) The bottom of both grinders fell off dumping salt crystals or peppercorns into the salad.
2) The rod connecting the grinding mechanism and the battery drive is turned by a plastic bushing that wore out in less than a month, leaving the grinders with no grinding capabilty.
Anyone that purchases these grinders would be making a mistake.
