Customer Review: Does what it does well.
Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this bottle to make carbonated water on demand for special drinks like homemade cream sodas. It does that just fine. I do have a few gripes about it, though, so here's my short pros vs cons list:
Pros
+ Looks nice.
+ Cheaper than bottled seltzer (if you can find an inexpensive bulk CO2 supplier)
+ Fast. You can get a 1 L bottle of water ready in under a minute.
+ Air tight. When making water for a small glass of something, keeping the left over water in the bottle works fine. A week later, it'll still be bubbly. Screw the lid on tight, though!
Cons
- Small. 1 L of water doesn't last very long at all.
- Confusing. The instruction manual says to fill the thing about 2/3 full. I have no idea how to manage this. I can't see inside the bottle well enough to see how full it is, and there is no fill level indicator.
- Heavy when empty. It's not so heavy that it's inconvenient to carry or difficult to lift, but it's heavy enough to mess with attempts at guessing how much water is inside by picking the bottle up to see how much it weighs.
- Inconvenient. Sort of. CO2 doesn't mix too well with warm water, so for best results, you have to have cold water ready for whenever you want to make soda water. For me, that means keeping a bottle of water in the fridge and topping it off every time I make carbonated water. You should also plan on keeping the siphon bottle in the fridge to keep the bottle itself cold. The bottle plus a separate jug of water together can take up a lot of fridge space. Budget accordingly.
- Potentially expensive. I try to buy bulk chargers at no more than 50c each, but they can be hard to find at that price. Since I almost never use the full liter one charger produces (more on that below), much of an increase over 50c per charger would put soda water from this gadget about on par with bottled soda water. Bad.
I realize the "potentially expensive" con doesn't line up with the "cheaper than bottled seltzer" pro, so let me explain. The primary reason both things are on there is that it can be difficult sometimes to find inexpensive CO2 chargers. Packs of ten from iSi or other companies can often be a dollar each or more, and ten chargers won't go very far. Buying in bulk from companies like Leland or Mr. Fizz helps knock this expense down. However, as I mentioned in one of the other cons, there is no window on the body of the bottle to see how much liquid is inside. When I make carbonated water, I use as much as I can, but when I suspect there is less than six to eight ounces left, I dump the rest and make more. Trouble is, I have to rely on my best guess, which without committing to careful measuring is usually way wrong. This sometimes means more wasted water than I intend to waste, which basically increases the per-unit cost of the CO2 chargers. Oh, what I would give for a tiny fill level strip on the side of the siphon.
Overall a good product. Worth every penny for the heavy seltzer drinker.
