Well, almost. This is the second Zyliss product we've bought (see my review for the Zyliss Ice Cream Scoop)and find it to be a great product.
We're impressed with:
1. Quality of construction (Light, yet well-weighted)
2. Ergonomics (Fits just right into the hand-- especially important for a woman when some tools are just too big)
3. Blade (Substantial, yet thin)
4. Design (The `Y' allows for a wide cutting area)
This kitchen tool is great for slicing in long, wide strip such items as: cucumbers, squash, carrots, potatoes, apples, papayas, and even lemons. We like to use it to make old-fashioned carrot curls. Just slice a thin and even strip, roll it into a circle and secure it with a toothpick. You can place a carrot curl at each end of the toothpick and immediately place it in a container with iced water (very cold) to chill and set the curl. If you like making fish filets wrapped in potato strips and sautéing them, this is the perfect tool to use.
We have used a mandolin to create crinkle cut vegetables, but this does an even finer job when it comes to thin slicing items that are very firm, such as sweet potatoes.
This is one of the tools a chef uses to create garnishes. Whether your culinary needs are basic--thinly peeled strips, or artistic, the Zyliss Y Peeler gets the best rating from us. Will it peel a grape? No, but why bother?
