Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss Cook-N-Serve TongsCustomer Review: Excellent design and manufacture Summary: 5 Stars
Once in awhile a product or service comes along, and it exceeds all of your expectations. I found the Zyliss tongs to be one of these products.
The rubber grips fit your hand perfectly and do not slide about. The rubber slider button is located right where your thumb rests so when you grab your tongs all you do is flick your thumb slightly forward, and the tongs open and are ready to use. To store the tongs, squeeze the arms shut, slide the thumb-button toward you, and they are locked shut.
The arms of the tongs are made of nicely brushed stainless steel. The shape of these arms is sort of a swoop - very graceful looking. But there is also a functional reason for the shape. Since all aspects of the arms are curved, there are no sharp angles that make cleaning the insides of the arms difficult. Swish a dishwashing brush over the tops and then over the insides, rinse, and you are done. The shape of the arms also adds to the strength and rigidity so you can grip heavier items like cobs of corn without any flexing or loss of grip.
The silicon-rubber gripper pads have a shape that follows the curves of the arms and are not symmetrical. The bottom edge that contacts your frying pan or other cooking surface is almost straight and at an angle. This allows a person to hold the tongs in a natural position and still grab small pieces of food that are lying flat on the cooking surface. (To prove this to myself, I tested the tongs by repeatedly grabbing a split peanut, and it easily grabbed and held onto it every time. O.K. how about a small kernel of popcorn? Again it worked perfectly.) The bottom edges of the pads are slanted slightly inward so that when you grip something the edges tend to slide a little bit under the piece of food, or if you cock the tongs a bit, you can slide the tong all the way under a burger for flipping or serving. I haven't tried it yet, but I think these tongs would also be perfect for serving things like asparagus. The inside surface of the gripper pads are concave to help grip things like eggs and stir-fry. Along the inside bottom edges of the gripper pads are a series of molded-in bumps, starting with a tiny one in the front and progressively getting a little bigger back towards you. They seem to be very effective in gripping even greasy meats in a frying pan. I like my tongs better than a fork for cooking and serving meats. I don't have to shake the tongs to get them to release their hold on the meat like a fork sometimes does. The rubber pads also have an ob-round hole in them. I don't know if this adds to the grip on some things, or maybe it is just to make them look a little cutesier.
If you are like me, I'll bet that you too will enjoy using the Zyliss tongs. And, I'll bet that you will find yourself using them for tasks for which you previously had to use various other kitchen tools - spatulas, stirring spoons, salad tongs, or serving forks. Enjoy.
