Customer Review: Great multitasker, but not for sprouts

This guy is huge, so expect for it to take up a lot of space; but its bane is also its boon, so its girth also makes it more versatile than some of its daintier competitors. The plastic bowl can be used to clean a moderate amount of greens (you can let the leaves of some of those dirtier edible plants--spinach, for example--just float on top and let the grit sink to the bottom) instead of a potentially germy sink. Its size also allows for more efficient drying; depending on how much you have in there, a few spins will suffice. The lid, as mentioned by another reviewer, can be used as a drip tray (nevertheless, I imagine getting the string wet can also weaken it over time). And the inner basket can be used as a colander in a pinch.The spinner will work wonders on herbs...basil in particular has a way of wilting on me within what seems like seconds, which is such a waste since I can only buy it fresh in bunches. But after washing it, spinning it, and sticking it in a plastic bag with a paper towel, I have fresh basil for at least a few days, which is fantastic since fresh herbs always make my food taste like I worked harder than I did. I also give a gentle spin to berries so I don't get too much liquid into my yogurt or cereal or whatever.
One caveat: the other day, in a rare lapse of judgment (maybe not so rare), I tried drying some alfalfa sprouts in this. I bet you see where this is going. Ahem. Yes, those wiley little sprouts got stuck in the holes of the basket and it was a pain to clean (imagine something along the lines of trying to tweeze out every hair off your arm individually). In my defense, alfalfa sprouts retain a lot of water; it seemed like a good idea at the time. Stick with paper towels.
One other note: my mom had something like this when I was a kid, and even when I was too young to help with anything else I could wash and spin the salad until it was dry as dirt. Spinning and making the whole bowl rock like a toppling top on the counter was wholesome fun! My mom would always give me credit for her fabulous salads.

Pulling the cord in the lid of this salad spinner rotates the basket in two directions, drying greens quicker than spinners that only rotate in a single direction. The yo-yo-like action follows the same principal a spaniel uses when shaking off after his bath: the back and forth motion prevents droplets from being trapped in the folds of greens. (Conveniently, it also rewinds the pull-cord.) The basket measures 9-3/4 inches in diameter and 4-1/4 inches deep, ample capacity for family-size salads. It fits into a big transparent bowl made of light but rugged plastic that can be used to serve salads--or potato chips.
