Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, WhiteCustomer Review: It's Cheap and It Works Well Summary: 5 Stars
We have owned the Zyliss Metal Ice Cream Scoop for several years now since I purchased it here at Amazon.
The bottom line is that it works great - better than any ice crem scoop I have ever used. Where it really shines is in scooping really cold, hard, densely-packed ice cream (after all, a cheap spoon could "scoop" soft ice cream!). I have yet to encounter a package of ice cream that was so hard that this scoop could not easily remove a scoopful.
The only negative thing I can say about this item is that over the years the metal has pitted in a lot of places. Not sure what has caused it as I always take good care of my kitchen utensils. It has not affected the function yet as far as I can tell, but it is starting to look a little ugly and I imagine we will have to replace it at some point. The good news is that this scoop costs so little, that this won't be a big deal.
Customer Review: Good for bowls, not good for cones Summary: 4 Stars
Pros:
- Cuts through hard ice cream easily
- Excellent for dolloping out bowls of ice cream quickly
- Feels okay in the hand
Cons:
- Has a really hard time packing ice cream into and on top of the brown sugar cones you buy at the supermarket (a regular soup spoon still works great)
- Doesn't release ice cream cleanly (ice cream left on the scoop, need a spoon to get it off)
- Big and has some weight
Summary:
- Good for scooping out ice cream into bowls. Not for cones. Big and a little heavy.
UPDATE: Got used to the scoop. For cones, you just need to focus on scooping small pieces and pushing them onto the cone in different ways. And work over the sink. With small pieces, the ice cream also comes off the scoop more easily -- it gets harder when the scoop gets cold. I would update my rating to 5 stars if I could.
Customer Review: Scoop perfection Summary: 5 Stars
I rarely see an item with so many reviews and yet nothing less than five stars. Believe me, this scoop earns and deserves every star. I bought mine in Europe, but since then this has been popping up everywhere, including on Good Eats (for you Alton Brown fans). I've had the teflon scoops, the heat-retaining scoops, the toothed scoop, the spade, and a couple of dishers (where the arm sweeps the cup, which intuitively seems to be the best - but isn't). Nothing removes ice-cream that has been frozen hard, the way this scoop does. And it's built like a rock. Forget the twist-scooping action, just ram it into the ice-cream, twist and get a scoop. Put the rest of your ice-cream back in the freezer while users of other scoops are still letting it soften, or microwaving it, or trying other ways to compensate for their inferior scoops. No politeness here. Your other scoops do not measure up to this one.
Customer Review: Metallic surface wears away Summary: 1 Stars
I just added two images, so check them out. They show how poor the surface is. I own quite a few Zyliss products and after starting out as a big fan of them and having used them for a couple years, I've realized that some of the products, including this one are poor quality due to the cheap matte metallic finish that wears away with repeated use & washing. I always use scrubbers intended for non-stick pans, but this wear still occurs. And who knows what kinds of chemicals are in the cheap finish they use? Looks great out of the box, but they show their age before long. I notice this particularly on this scoop and on their garlic press. If Zyliss utilized the same design, but simply used stainless steel, I'd be thrilled and would give 5-stars. For comparison, their pizza slicer and peelers ARE stainless steel and are fantastic.
Customer Review: Really great scoop, terrible quality Summary: 2 Stars
This scoop is great. It slides right into the hardest ice cream, and when you twist the handle, it makes a shapely ball of ice cream easily. The scooping part is stainless steel (which I'm a fan of), and I took off a point for the plastic handle (although it doesn't conduct cold as much, which does make it comfortable to hold).
UPDATE:
The scooping part is definitely NOT stainless steel. I'm not sure where I got that information from. The scoop has started to peel and for some reason, has started to pit (yes, pit). Strangely enough, it also has some staining that won't wash away (I've never had this problem with a spoon before). Would recommend against buying until they make the scoop out of actual stainless steel.
