Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, WhiteCustomer Review: Solid feel, very durable Summary: 5 Stars
This is probably the 5th scoop I've tried.
I've had traditional scoops, and fancy scoops. I've tried the ones with the thumb button for slicing through the back of the ice cream scoop. Scoops with heat pipes and ice cream spades.
My wife and I think the Zyliss is great though.
It feels VERY solid in the hand. I never feel like it's going to break. The metal appears to be matted stainless rather chrome plated. (I don't like cheap chrome plating because it peels after a while.)
It's been very durable with no signs of wear.
The big questions is how hard is it to get the ice cream from the scoop?
The scoop has enough thermal mass that it will melt the ice cream a bit and it slips right off. However, if you have a very cold scoop, the ice cream will still stick to it. I can't see how this can be avoided, except maybe with the heat pipe scoops (btw, I don't think they work well because they take too long to melt the surface of the ice cream). If you run the Zyliss in warm/cool water between several scoops, you should have little problems getting ice cream off of it.
All in all, very happy with this scoop. I don't think there is a better one on the market!
Customer Review: Easy to use and yield great result! Summary: 5 Stars
I did my research on Amazon before settling with this scoop and I am very happy with it.
It's solidly built--metal scoop and plastic handle. Due to its weight, the inside core of the handle and the scoop are probably a one-piece metal.
It's easy to use--ice cream won't stick to the scoop and the specially designed scoop makes rounded scoop quite easily even if you don't dip the scoop in warm water. Due to the flat edge of the scoop, it penetrates hard ice cream quite easily. Now you can freeze your ice cream really hard, serve it and enjoy it longer before it starts to melt. I tried and I can say that you can make rounded scoop every single time!
How does it compare to my several other scoop? The design of the scoop is no comparison. Other spoon-shaped scoops actually make the scooping more difficult, you have to go back and scrape several times in order to get enough ice cream in the scoop to make a rounded scoop. With this one, which looks more like a shovel, you only need to do it once and you will see great result with ease.
Better yet, buy it as a filler to get free shipping.
Customer Review: Great scoop, but not perfect.... Summary: 4 Stars
When first holding this ice cream scoop one of the first things you'll notice is its weight. From the start you can tell that this scoop is very solid. No moving parts, or liquids or gels inside of it, but very simple and effective. The shape and weight of the scoop allows you to scoop even the hardest ice cream. In addition, as you dig the scoop into ice cream, the ice cream tends to naturally "roll" into a perfect sized scoop. Very good scoop.
The only negative thing I have to say is that the metal finish on the scoop needs some improvement. After every use I hand wash this scoop...though I believe it is dishwasher safe I've never washed it that way. After several months of owning this scoop I've noticed that a couple tiny "bubbles" have formed on the scoop where the finish has chipped off. I don't use any abrasive materials to wash this item. Just a simple sponge and soap. I currently still use this scoop, but if the finish keeps chipping away I'll definitely be looking for something else in the near future.
Customer Review: Pitting Metal -- Dishwasher Safe? Summary: 3 Stars
The metal scoop of the first sample I bought began pitting within a few weeks. I thought that this was my fault and that the scoop was not dishwasher-safe. I couldn't find any information about it on the Zyliss website but I bought another one because I couldn't find anything better on the market. However, the second one began to pit as well -- even though it was never exposed to the dishwasher.
The pitting doesn't affect the function but it doesn't look very attractive and it makes me wonder if I'm eating something toxic. I would have preferred a rough aluminized finish than the satin one they used here. I also don't think that the tool is particularly well-balanced when I'm trying to leverage out hard-packed ice cream, but this is a subjective complaint. I'm going to try the Wilton Incredible Ice Cream Scoop next. WILTON ENTERPRISES 2109-6691 INCREDIBLE ICE CREAM SCOOP
Customer Review: Overrated - it's just an ice cream scoop Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to pad an order recently. At the time, it was perhaps the highest-rated ice cream scoop on Amazon. From some of the reviews, I would have thought that this scoop has near-magical qualities. Now, when I fall in love with a product, I'll rave about it as much as the next person; I'm not as cynical as this review may sound. But come on, folks--this is just an ice cream scoop.
The good:
Heavy duty (as long as a finish doesn't wear off, I imagine I'll never have to throw this away)
The bad:
Nothing
Some say that you don't have to heat this up. They claim that it cuts through the hardest ice cream, and somehow the ice cream simply falls off the scoop. I've found this claim to be overstated.
I do not recommend avoiding this ice cream scoop. But if you have one that's in decent shape, don't buy this based on the claims of some of these reviewers. It's a good scoop, but it's not magical.
