Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss 71372 Metal Ice-Cream Scoop with Ergonomic Plastic Handle, WhiteCustomer Review: Lasted 6 years Summary: 4 Stars
Thanks to Amazon's "Instant Order Update" at the top of the page I know just when I bought this: Christmas Day, 2004. I don't know why I was shopping for an ice cream scoop on Christmas Day...maybe Santa forgot to bring me one.
I'm finally retiring our Zyliss scoop - metal flakes are coming off the scoop portion. It's been pitted for a while and I've noticed small areas where the metal coating has come off, but last night I saw metal flakes in my vanilla ice cream. I'm not upset about it (though I'm trying not to think of the flakes I've probably eaten) - the scoop has always been machine washed and it's very inexepensive.
The scoop is the best I've used. The handle is easy to grip, it's got a nice weight to it, and it cuts through hard ice cream easily. I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the metal flaking. I wouldn't mind paying more for a solid metal scoop portion - that would make this perfect.
For my next ice cream scoop I was thinking about getting a Rösle Ice Cream Scoop, since America's Test Kitchen rated it as their top scoop in 2009. It looks like that scoop has quality issues now, though. Their second choice, the Zeroll Aluminum Ice Cream Scoop is not dishwasher-safe, and is a bit pricey. The Zyliss scoop was not rated.
As a replacement I'm going to buy the OXO Good Grips Solid Stainless Steel Ice Cream Scoop. The scoop portion is solid stainless steel, so no danger of flaking. It doesn't have a lever or button to eject the ice cream - those never are helpful and just get in the way. The handle looks solid, without the rubber "grip" usually found on OXO products. I'll review that scoop once I've spent some quality time with it.
Customer Review: Here's the Scoop! Summary: 5 Stars
We are a family of ice cream lovers and have literally eaten our way through a number of ice cream scoops. Are we pros at scooping? I'd say so. We have had the type that has a chemical inside it, making scooping quicker. We didn't see it that way and once washed in the dish washer, corrosion became a problem. Another one came with a button to pop-out the scoop. It didn't work well. The last one had a thin shovel attachment to force out the ice cream. It too, corroded.
So, here's the scoop: I won't put my new Zyliss scoop in the dish washer. I mean, how hard is it to wash the little thing, after all? This should stave off any pitting problems for a long while.
The Zyliss ice cream scoop is ergonomically made to work comfortably in your hand. There is even a small place just under the metal bowl of the scoop for your thumb to fit as you scoop up your yummy dessert. It's nicely weighted, which helps you dig into the solidly frozen confection. As you see from its picture, the 'digging' portion of the scoop is broad, allowing you to cut through its frozen surface. Pleasantly though, there are no sharp, rough edges; just tough metal that lets the scoop do its job.
As soon as our ice cream scoop arrived, we put it to the test. I had made a sorbet and it was very hard frozen. As you know, water-based frozen products make the task of scooping nearly impossible. It's as if you are virtually cutting through ice--which you are--and the Zyliss scoop proved to be a winner. For those who do not have much strength in their hands or wrists, this a perfect ice cream scoop.
We look forward to many years' use.
Customer Review: Satisfying a scoop connoisseur Summary: 5 Stars
We've been through 4 different ice cream scoops over the past few years, and haven't really been satisfied with one until now. This scoop is fantastic!
The stand-out feature for me is the ability to scoop really hard ice cream. We keep our freezer set at 0 degrees for food presevation, but premium ice creams are rock hard at that temperature. But I'm too impatient to wait for the ice cream to soften!
The zyliss has two features that make it better at scooping hard ice cream:
1. The shape of the handle -- this is a scoop that you can really productively bear down on. There's a nice edge to push against with your thumb, and the scoop is aligned so that a downward thrust is very effective at scooping. Many scoops fail by providing nothing to push down against (leaving one trying to grasp the handle very hard to hold on) or having a scoop that requires a sideways (instead of downward) scooping motion.
2. The "beak" of the scoop -- it's almost sharp, and helps cut through the ice cream and any embedded goodies. However, it's not pointy in the way that some are, and won't accidentally pierce the side of the container.
Now, it doesn't magically scoop hard ice cream- it still requires significant force. What's different is that this scoop actually lets one use a lot of force!
The only downside is that we've found it's not completely dishwasher safe. After several weeks of use, we started getting tiny corrosion spots in the scoop bowl. This has been true for *every* scoop we've ever tried, so we've resolved just to handwash it, which isn't a big deal.

Customer Review: Finally - The perfect ice cream scoop! Summary: 5 Stars
Having been disappointed with every ice cream scoop we've bought in the past, we were still in search of the perfect scoop. Sure, those other metal scoops seemed nice at first... they had heft, seemed durable, and their shiny metal was oh-so-pretty. But one trip through the dishwasher left them dull and corroded, the metal handles turned cold as you dipped ice cream, and the poor design of the handles hurt my hands and wrist as I had to use all my muscle just to dig out a tiny scoop of ice cream.
This one is made differently and has received rave reviews, so we thought "For $7, why not?!?" We are very glad we gave it a chance! As an admittedly lazy dish cleaner, I put everything in the dishwasher, and this scoop handles it in style, coming out as shiny and pretty as when it went in. The scoop has a nice cutting edge that slices through the hardest ice cream and requires little or no muscle. Actually, it has a somewhat muscular design, with a very comfortable and easy-to-grip handle - no more hurting wrists or having to ask my husband to dip my ice cream for me! The plastic handle insulates hands from the cold, and the whole scoop seems very sturdy and durable. And I thought our old scoops were hefty, but this one puts them to shame! The weight of this scoop makes it feel like a serious tool in your hand, but it is well-balanced and easy to wield.
This scoop makes dipping ice cream so easy, we may just have to eat it more often!
Customer Review: An ice cream scoop that really is better. Summary: 5 Stars
Many years ago, I had an ice cream scoop snap in half and cut me pretty bad. I still have the scar. After that, I gave up on them and just used regular spoons. What was the point of buying another?
Then I was looking for a fourth item on one of those 4-for-3 kitchen deals. I saw that the reviews for this scoop were really high, so I for $9 (free with the deal), I gave it a shot.
To my surprise, it really is better than any other ice cream scoop I have ever used, for two reasons:
1. It's solid. I don't think it could possible snap in half like the other one did.
2. It's sort of "square". It's hard to explain, but the end is not circular. It has corners. This is important because that the part the really digs into the ice cream well.
So, you can apply lots of force and the corner will dig right in and scoop at the ice cream, no matter how hard it is. You don't have to let the ice cream soften. It's not going to magically cut through solid ice without force, but its possibly with a moderate amount of force to scoop your ice cream out without waiting. That's all I need from an ice cream scoop, and all for a decent price.
