Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater

Customer Review: Easy to use and everyone loves it.
Summary: 5 Stars

I know it's just a cheese grater but apparently it's made my sister and her family very happy. When she asked me to find one I took the task very seriously because she has carpal tunnel syndrome and sometimes she's limited by what she can do with her hands. Also, the other 4 members of her family are very picky. She called me to say it arrived and they are grating cheese on everything they can possibly grate cheese on. She said it's alot of fun to use, very easy and it doesn't make her fingers go numb while turning the handle. Everyone loves it. She said it's also very easy to clean.

Customer Review: Cheese Grater
Summary: 4 Stars

As others have mentioned, this is great for parmesan. It works ok for firm cheddar or mozzarella. The key to getting it to grind well is to use small pieces of cheese. With my old Pampered Chef, I could put in a large chunk of cheese and it would grind down until it was very thin. With this grinder, larger chunks get stuck and I have to reposition. The soft cheeses seem to get stuck in the barrel more than the Pampered chef grinder. So, I tap this one more often. This Grinder works fine, but if I had it to do over again, I would probably get another Pampered Chef instead.

Customer Review: Very Satisfied

When the handle on my over 10 year old Zyliss cheese grater finally broke I went looking for a replacement. I read all the reviews here on all the different available brands and models. I was somewhat put off by the negative reviews I read about this unit but nevertheless decided I would get it. Boy, I don't know where the negative reviewers where coming from, but this Zyliss grater is improved over the older version and works like a dream. Granted it is not really designed for softish cheeses but if you want a rotary grater for hard cheeses this is the one.

Customer Review: Not very good for people with small hands
Summary: 3 Stars

I found it was easy to take apart and clean, but using it is a little bit awkward. In order to create enough pressure to grate quickly, I have to hold it higher up than it was designed (because my hands are smaller/weaker than it was designed for?) If I hold it like designed, the cheese isn't pressed into the grater as well and it takes a very long time to grate. This is my first parmesan grater of this style, so I don't know if other brands would have the same problem or not for me. I imagine it would easier for people with bigger/stronger hands.

Customer Review: They made a good thing worse :(
Summary: 2 Stars

I got several years of good service from my old one, until the plastic screw that holds the handle to the drum broke. Unfortunately, Zyliss couldn't leave well enough alone. This is no longer the "classic" grater I loved. They have changed the shape, flex, and geometry of the pressure arm so that it is just about impossible to apply pressure to a piece of cheese when it gets thinner than about 1/4 inch. Why do companies think they have to always be "improving" something that works well already? Now I'm looking for a different brand of grater.
