Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zyliss 11370 Classic Rotary-Style Cheese Grater

Customer Review: Very Slow
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this grate to replace an old Norpro that I had. It is clever in that the entire drum below the part where the cheese goes in has teeth. This is in contrast to the Norpro that I had, which had a shoulder about 1/8 inch from each side that didn't have teeth. If the cheese got over there, it wouldn't be grated. That said, there are two fairly poorly designed aspects. First is the hand length. It is so short that to be able to apply even a modest pressure to the cheese, you have to squeeze fairly hard. I have huge hands and even I find it cumbersome. The other problem is that the grating drum has holes that are too small (and probably a little dull). The cheese that comes out is so fine that it takes forever to get even a small amount of shredded cheese. Also, if your Parmesan cheese is a little older and harder the problem is exacerbated. Finally the crank is make of plastic. So far (maybe a month) it hasn't broken, but it feels a little flimsy.

So bottom line. It works, but you probably aren't going to be in love with this tool.

Customer Review: Don't load cheese near the handle
Summary: 2 Stars

This product is very easy to use, simple to disassemble, and it does do a good job grating cheese - but with one problem. If you load the entirety of the hopper, the cheese that's grated in the back of the drum near the handle mashes together and gets stuck in a big glob. I had to soak the drum for awhile to get it out! And since the drum is so small, it's not as if you can really get anything in there to clean it out.

This means I only stick small chunks of cheese towards the front now, and the uneven pressure on the plastic handle worries me. I'm not sure how long it will last.

Bottom line: a flat cheese grater is just about as fast (since you don't have to bother cutting the cheese into smaller chunks!), less wasteful (you don't have to guess how much cheese you want to cut, just stop grating when you have enough - plus the amount of cheese wastes and stuck in the drum) and far easier to clean up. Sure, it takes a bit more elbow grease, but I consider that my daily exercise, and an excuse for an extra serving of cheese...

Customer Review: For HARD cheeses....
Summary: 4 Stars

...it's actually written right on the packaging. Most of the less than stellar reviews are from folks who attempted to grate soft cheese. Cheddar need not apply! But if you're married to man who consumes parmesan like most people drink water, and by this I mean he eats A LOT of parmesan, this is a real time saver. Hubby grates parm on a daily basis and does so rather carelessly and thus frequently nicked himself on the regualr board-style hand graters. So for any speed demons, this style of fine hard cheese grater is mandatory. If you're on the dainty side (or left handed) I could see this tool being a tad challenging. Once we've used it for several months I will have to update my review so can report on just how long of a lifespan one can expect from daily, vigorous use. For now, I would consider it the best hard cheese grater (in this price range) on the market. It's sturdy, won't take up much space in the drawer or counter, and consistently does the only job it needs to do.

Customer Review: I like my 20 year old one better...
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this same grater from the same manufacturer 20 years ago which still works fine. I bought this one thinking I would replace my 20 year old one, which my daughter wanted to take to college. When I got it, the first thing I noticed was that the initial design had been modernized.. more rounded edges, sleaker and sexier. The most important part, the grating drum, appeared to be the same which made me happy. Upon using the new grater, I notice that the balance of it is off when you're grating cheese compared to my 20 year old model. It wobbles a little when you're turning the handle to grate cheese, and I'm not sure why.. Needless to say, I gave my daughter this new one to take to school and I'm keeping my 20 year old one which I think works better.

Customer Review: Very good (and fun!) for hard cheese grating
Summary: 4 Stars

It's a lot of fun and very simple using this to very quickly shred a little parmesan over plates of fresh pasta and salad, restaurant style! I agree with another review that this does a great job with parmesan cheese, but I've tried grating some other slightly softer cheese with it and it just flattened and smeared it all over the drum. It may have worked ok if I'd lubed the drum with some cooking oil, but I wouldn't want to do that. I really got it specifically for hard grating cheeses anyway (like mature fontina -- nothing else I've found works very well for that).

If you enjoy cooking and trying new gadgets to make it more interesting, this one is perfect for hard cheese grating, especially parm. Have fun with it!
