Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Grip Colored Paring Knives, Set of 4Customer Review: WOW-SERS! Summary: 5 Stars
First, let me say - there is a HUMONGOUS difference between the JA Henckel knives and the Zwilling Henckel knives. I have always been a fan of Henckel knives. When I saw the paring set, I was very excited, unfortunately I didnt read the entire description very thoroughly nor did I look at the picture so when I received the paring set in the little block, first thing I noticed was - geez, they look CHEAP. Of course compared to the full solid metal knives, they're going to. I also noticed the knives were stamped as made in Vietnam. **NOTE** THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL SET I SENT BACK, NOT THE ZWILLING PARING SET I AM SO ENAMORED WITH TODAY**. I was aggravated with myself, but thought - they were cheap, so I'll give them a shot. I was not impressed. Asthetically, these Henckels are not up to the standard I'm used to - BUT... GEEZ-O-PETE!!! They are fantastic! Another review I read stated the handles are bothersome - and I disagree. Yes.. if you are handling these knives the same way you would the full metal chef knife - yes, I can see where someone would think their own hands were getting in their way, but you cannot do that with these knives. Handle them gently and they cut just as beautifully and fluidly as my Twin Cuisines. There is a little more flexibility in the blade than I would normally care for, but again - these are constructed totally differently. I wish this set came with blade covers because they are super sharp, but they are colorful enough that they catch your attention in the drawer, or, what I did was buddy them up in my block. I couldnt be happier with these babies. Im glad I realized I'd ordered the wrong ones.
Customer Review: Love These Knives Summary: 5 Stars
I've had a set of these knives for more than 5 years and they get used virtually every day, usually several times. They're in the dishwasher almost every day as well. I have the ones made in Germany, not the Henckels international. I've read it makes a difference. I also have a large set of Cutco knives. The Henckels set is the one I constantly reach for. About the only cutco pieces I use are the chef's knife and the bread knife for larger loaves of bread. The Henckels set is used for everything else. Spent a ton of money on the expensive set and I use the dirt cheap set. I've given this set as gifts to many people including most members of the family. The piece I use the most is the bird's beak knife. Fantastic for peeling everything I don't like to use peelers. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH RUST. I don't expect these to work as well for things like heavy chopping jobs due to the weight and size limitations. I wish a version of a chef's knife were available. These have been downrated by sone reviewers for things such as ease of use and comfort. For a set that tends to get grabbed and used briefly, it really doesn't become an issue, but I have peeled 10 lbs of potatoes and sliced many loaves of french baguette at one time without any obvious discomfort to me. I've been told I'm a gourmet cook so I do a great deal of cooking and if I love using these knives, I would think most light-duty chefs would as well. The only negative is not having a chef's knife as the fifth in the set. (one with the wide blade)If there were a slightly longer serrated knife, I might just sell my Cutco set.
Customer Review: Size and brand confusion Summary: 3 Stars
These knives are very sharp and sturdy. In addition to all the other reviews, I wanted to point out a few things that may not be apparent prior to purchasing:
1. The handles are all the same size and length for all four knives. If you're used to handles that are about the same length as the blade, this may come as a surprise. It's not a bad thing; it just takes some getting used to (especially with the smallest curved blue knife.)
2. The blade is on the opposite side of what a novice might first think. (I don't know why, but many people think the curved side of the blade is the sharp side. It isn't. Don't cut your fingers.)
3. There are two versions of this color four-piece paring knife set. One is made by J.A. Henckels (the higher quality brand made only in Germany) and the other by Henckels International (the value brand made in China.) They are not the same set of knives, but they look almost identical and come in similar packaging. I noticed that some of the reviewers had some negative comments, and I presume that they might have mistakenly been referring to the Henckels International version, widely available at Target, or possibly one of the many copycat versions not made by Henckels at all.
Hope this note is helpful for those looking to purchase the right set of paring knives.
Happy cooking!
Customer Review: Outstanding Utility knives! Summary: 5 Stars
At first I was turned off by the bright (gaudy) colors. However, I have learned to appreciate that these knives are color-coded! They stand out in the knife drawer, and you can always find the one you are looking for. Consequently, the right knife is used to get the job done.
The knives are indestructable and durable. We have owned ours 4-5 years and they show no unusual wear. Put them into the dishwasher! We don't do that with another knife (regretted it when we have), but these can take it. The knives are well-designed for function, comfortable to handle, strong, & sharp.
We love them and gave sets to our adult kids who always are commenting on how useful they are. Friends that visit and use ours comment favorably on them.
These aren't showy knives for formal dining nor will they impress anyone with your classy style. However, they do impress everyone who uses them. And, the price is nice.
Customer Review: One of the best purchases from Amazon.com Summary: 5 Stars
For this amount of money, you can get 4 very "sharp" multitasking knives.
The red one that I thought, I would use the lest out of the 4, is what I use daily in the kitchen.Truly multitasking. Delicate fruits/ any bread/ sandwich/cake
The green one- any job can be done with it in the kitchen.
The other two knives work greatly as backup knives.
One could say that the knives are cheap looking with those vivid colors of the knives. However, the color code was one of the reasons for my purchase. I tend to lose small knives- so far 4 henkel 4 star paring knives have been lost. The color code helps me keep track of the knives and prevent me from cutting myself when I take out the knives from the drawer.
Highly recommended.
