Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zojirushi NS-LAC05XA Micom 3-Cup (Uncooked) Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Perfect in every way Summary: 5 Stars
Despite already having an excellent rating and 245 reviews to its credit, I felt I needed to weigh in on this fantastic machine.
Everything about this is a pleasure to use. The cord retracts into the body, the steam releasing apparatus easily disassembles for cleaning, the controls are simple and gratifying, the display is easy to read, and the handle is fastened securely. It has a small footprint, and it's easy to store in cabinets, while being light enough to retrieve without hesitation (unlike, say, a kitchenaid mixer).
I find myself often planning meals around cooked rice now, simply because it cooks rice so incredibly well. I've yet to throw anything at it that it hasn't handled with aplomb. From straight sushi rice to "forbidden" black rice to Turkish pilav to steel cut breakfast oats -- even steamed vegetables, chicken breast, salmon, you name it. It cooks everything properly, and without fuss.
This is truly a no-brainer. It costs 5 times what the cheapest rice cooker costs, but it is at least 5 times as good as any other rice cooking appliance I've ever used. This thing feels indestructible, and I look forward to using it for another 20 years.
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
So i researched this thing for like a decade before finally pulling the trigger. I have to say i am completely satisfied and then some. I initially cringed at the idea of spending over $100 on a rice cooker but this was far and away worth it. I actually like it so much, I bought a second zojirushi, the induction model (GBC05) to see if it does any better on grains since i've heard mixed results. The LAC05 is damn near perfect anyhow and i don't know if ill notice much difference, but im gonna give it to my girlfriend since she liked it too and it was a convenient excuse to upgrade :) I'll let you guys know on that one too.
So far things i have made succesfully with the cooker include :sushi rice (made great sushi with it), brown rice (comes out very well but can be slightly mushy when i set the timer overnight probably due to the long soak time, though some prefer this consistency), jasmine rice was superb, and steel cut oats came out great too (i used 3/1 ratio with water).
So if you want to make various kinds of rice to perfection or near perfection, just suck up the price loss and think of it as a one time investment that will yield a very high return.
Customer Review: Be aware that the battery will fail......... Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this cooker about three years ago and it does indeed make "perfect" brown rice. It has also been used for oatmeal in the morning, which requires the timer. That is where the problem lies...The battery for the timer will eventually die on you. For me, it was after about 2 1/2 years. I have no idea how some people are getting 4, 5 or more years out of the battery perhaps I got a lemon? Anyway, it is soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be user replaced. What does that mean? It means nothing really. You can take it apart and cut the old battery out and solder a new one in (not recommended unless you know what you are doing) or you simply keep it plugged into a wall outlet all the time. A dead battery has no bearing on the operation of the unit. All the battery does is keep the correct time when you are unplugged from a 115volt outlet (just like your computer does).
I will "one day" solder in a new battery, but for now, I just keep it pulled into the wall and don't worry about it. The cooker works fine and the rice and oatmeal come out perfect. If the battery was easily replaceable, I would give it five stars...
Customer Review: LOVE THIS ZO MICOM 3-cup RICE COOKER Summary: 5 Stars
I never thought I needed a rice cooker, I've been cooking excellent rice on the stove for 30+ years, but I when I read about this cooker as also a good steel-cut oats cooker, I decided it was time to get one. I read reviews on all the other models and finally settled on this one. I absolutely can't believe how much I love this thing. It makes great rice AND great oatmeal (soaked, which is what I wanted) and it is so super easy! So easy.
Be sure to read some of the other reviews here that tell you how much water to use and simply put, how to use the machine, because the manual might as well be in Greek. haha.
Oh -- when I got this, I immediately thought I should have gotten the larger unit, because the maximum amount you can make is 3 cups white rice, and less for brown rice. But -- I now think it's perfect, we are a 2 person household, and it's so easy to use that there's no reason not to make fresh rice every day if you want to.
Also, I ordered The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook , Hensperger, at the same time and it's great, very helpful, informative and has yummy recipes. Very highly recommended.
Customer Review: Does exactly what it is designed for, and does it well. Summary: 4 Stars
If you are looking for a fool proof way of cooking rice, then you have found it. It takes some time to cook the rice (20min perhaps); it's not instant, and you can't really use instant rice in it or it over cooks it and makes it semi-pasty. What is great about it is that it's easy, and makes rice to a near perfect consistency.
Put your rice in using the measuring cup that it comes with, add water to the level that is dictated on the rice cooking bowl, select your type of rice (white, brown, and sushi) and press your cook button. A little jingle lets you know it starts and is finished. It cleans up really easy, the rice bowl seems to have a protective coating, just take a sponge, water and little soap for sanitation purposes, and it is easily cleaned.
The timer feature is great, set it for when you want the rice to be finished, and the cooker does the rest. If you don't get it when it is fished cooking it goes into a warming mode and actually keeps it fresh for a long time... I would have expected it to dry out but it really doesn't. I have never had a problem with it, and I recommend it to anyone.
