I have two. They make good coffee. The problem is that on one of them the top of the canister that screws into the bottom of the canister was poorly manufactured such that it hurts my hand each time I screw it in, and it has never gotten better. Making matters worse, this screw-in top has little ridges all around its edge, presumably for better grip. Well, these ridges on the flawed top dig into the hand, causing great pain as I struggle to turn it. So, I have to use a dish towel over the cap when hand-turning it in or out. I called Zojirushi as well, and they confirmed that there is only one version of this coffee maker. There is no difference between the EC-BD15 and the EC-BD15BA. The "BA" signifies "black," as in the color of this machine. Strangely enough, the "BA" makes the price increase.
You can call Zojirushi direct (800-733-6270) and confirm this yourselves. Again, there is only one version, so be wary of paying more for the "BA."
As for the machine, it's great. The carafe retains heat well, thus negating the need for a warming element. This is better as your coffee won't cook and taste funny over time.

Ok to clear up this confusion, I called Zojirushi. They confirmed to me there is ONLY 1 VERSION of this coffee maker. Its just that they previously made the mistake of saying this unit uses a #3 filter, but in actuality, there are no #3 in USA, so you HAVE to use #4 and fold the top a bit or you will have to use #2 (which is a size lower but works perfectly). So either use #4 with adjustment or just use #2. Contrary to what many think, there is ONLY 1 version of this coffee maker, Costco sells the same ones here on Amazon. Look at the UPC and all units say EC-BD15BA, but will say on the top of the box EC-BD15.Customer Review: Excellent Coffee Maker

The design of the carafe on this maker is good; the mouth is a bit wider than most, but you will still need a bottle brush to really clean it. There is even a secondary carafe lid to prevent air from entering the carafe after you have brewed a pot.I bought mine at Costco for less than Amazon, and the latest revision of this model (Model EC-BD15BA) states that you can use the readily available #4 cone filters. I think Zojirushi realized that #4 filters are easily found for the American market.
The unit is easy to program for timed brewing, and the water level indicator is easy to read.

I did lots of reading of reviews, and this coffeemaker came out on top - water temperature and design being my top two criteria. The water temp, and therefore coffee is great. Haven't had any problems with the filter, or any other aspect of the brewing. Only problem is that the pour spout isn't very good - it sometimes dribbles a bit and occasionally doesn't go into the cup when I'm in a rush. This is minor in my book in comparison to the rest. The unit is solidly built, compact, and attractive, and makes excellent coffee.
