Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Zelco "itty bitty" Book Light, LED Edition

Customer Review: Good while it lasted, which wasn't long
Summary: 1 Stars

I liked this light a lot-- it was very light, it gently clipped onto the book, the LED light was more than adequate to read by, and the battery life was great. The problem is that before a week of use had gone by, one of the LEDs started to flicker. This caused considerable eye strain. I covered the light with black electrical tape as the remaining LED still provided just enough light to read by. Within a day or two, this LED also started to flicker. There was probably a flaky connection somewhere in the light, but it is not possible to open it up. So it could not be repaired. The flicker was awful-- I just couldn't use the light at that point. Very disappointing. If only it were more reliable, it would be the perfect book light. But I can't give a good review for something that didn't last a week.

Customer Review: Works well, quality is a bit flimsy
Summary: 4 Stars

This book light uses white LEDs to light the page, which is bright, but not glaring to my eyes. Some people don't like the LED light, but I personally find it easier on my eyes. The book light is small, and the steel clip holds well on even a pocketbook.

The unit operates on 4 AAA batteries, and when you install them you find the only problem I have with the unit-- it isn't designed very well-- the batteries tend to pop out until you get the cover on and locked down. Other than that, I recommend this light.

Note that the one I have has a rectangular shade on it, while the one pictured above is round-- I don't know if there is any functional difference between the two-- mine *is* slimmer than the one shown.

Customer Review: Tried a lot - this one is great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned and thrown away many book lights. Love this one because of it's size, light weight, brightness and 4 AAA batteries gives me many, many hours of reading time. I don't want to have to be tied down by a cord like some of the others are. Unfortunately after about 3 years I'll be buying a replacement but only because my book has fallen off my bed onto my hard wood floors one too many times. The light now flickers but only because of the abuse it's sustained (oh, and the fact that my puppy had a fun time chewing it once). Considering all it's been through it's been a great buy and now that I have to buy a replacement I won't consider another one, even after shopping around to see what might be new and improved over the last three years.

Customer Review: Itty Bitty Lite
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the third book light I have purchased for my wife. I bought it for my wife because its LED lights should have longer battery life than the old incandescent lights. We haven't had it long enough to determine if the battery life is longer or not. What we do notice, the light is a better quality light than the old one. The Itty Bitty Lite illuminates hardbound books quite well but doesn't disturb me while sleeping. Using this light with rechargeable lights eliminates the need for adapters and that dangling cord.
My wife likes it much better than the old one and has relegated the old one to the bottom shelf of her night stand. It seems sad to replace the perfectly working old light but the new one just works too well.

Customer Review: Very Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I have used the incandescent Itty Bitty Book Light for over 8 years - and it has traveled all over the world with me! I loved it and have given several as gifts. But, finally, mine wore out and I had to replace it. I purchased the LED Edition, thinking it would be much better and I would not have to replace bulbs (they are expensive). I used it last night and was very very disappointed. The light is not as bright and my eyes seemed to strain using it. Also, the light direction on the new model could not be adjusted (as in the incandescent model). I was reading a paperback so the light should have been sufficient to cover both pages but it was not. I'm packing it up and sending it back. Now my search begins for a better product! Too bad!
