Customer Review: Good, but not great and not worth $50.
Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this knife when it was on special for $50 with free shipping, but am not overly impressed with the entire thing. When I opened the package I was impressed with the beauty of the manufacturing and it is clearly better made than my regular kitchen knives. However, my regular kitchen knives, a set of at least twenty pieces, plus the block cost only $85, and some would say even that was overpaid since they are China manufactured. I hope this helps someone else make a decision and wish I had this information before I bought. Regards to all.
I have used the knife for about a week and my considered assessment is that it is simply not worth the money.
Evaluation:
- Firstly it is rather small, smaller than would seem by pictures.
- The height of the blade does not allow it's use where a narrow blade is needed, such as fileting or cutting around a rind of fruit, for example.
- The slotted blade, ostensibly to reduce sliced things from sticking to the blade does not function for me at all, and I see no difference between this and any other knife. This was a major point for me since I slice alot of veggies.
The knife has a nice balance and is pretty to look at, but that's not enough for $50 for one small knife. I had compared prices on EBAY before I pulled the trigger to purchase this knife and it appeared this one was a reasonable deal since it had free shipping and the name Wusthof - now I'm not so sure.
I read somewhere that Santoku means "three purposes". That's a cool concept but I'd like to know what the three purposes are. Further, I don't understand why the German company Wustof is making this knife. I am thinking I should have gone with a Japanese maker or a larger version or none at all. I don't mean to be too negative, but $50 is quite a bit to pay for one small knife with these issues.
