Customer Review: Teeming with maggots!

I've had my worm farm for exactly a month. At first, it was fun watching my worms wiggle around. But then, lots of fruitflies started hanging around my kitchen, so I moved the worm farm outside. Soon after that, I noticed that all the little ventilation holes were getting filled with weird little specks. Then, one day, I checked on the lower tray and there were about 10-15 maggots there. The roof had what looked like rice grains wiggling all over it. Baby maggots??? Baby worms??? I didn't know, but I tried to find out on the internet.
From what I read, maggots are a sign that you're keeping the compost too moist. I was watering about a cup a day, but after reading that, I stopped for the past few days. I also put the provided cloth between the roof and top floor... maybe if I had done that from the beginning, the flies couldn't have gotten inside to lay eggs. The websites say just to cut down on liquids, and the maggots will go through their lifecycle without reproducing. But so far, they are reproducing like crazy!!! Now, every tray is teeming with maggots!!! The whole surface is writhing, at least 1-2 huge maggots/square inch. It is creepy!
I was using the worm tea on my houseplants for the first couple weeks. Now, it has a foul poop smell, so I don't us it. I'm hoping this will clear up as the maggots die out. I don't know if I'll be able to use the compost or not. It is getting rid of my kitchen scraps though. I'll stick it out with less water and post an update next month.
