Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Wilton 2105-5038 Giant Cupcake PanCustomer Review: Easy to use! Kids and adults love it! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great cake to make. It takes a while to bake (325 for about 45 mins to an hour -- you'll need a Cake Tester to check if it's done because the pan is so deep) but if you spray it enough before it will pop right out if you let it cool for 10-15 minutes. I put both sides in the oven at the same time and it was fine. One time I used one cake mix and although it didn't fill it up all the way the cupcake (after I trimmed the top part of both sides to be able to frost the middle and connect them) was fine, just a tiny bit shorter. The second time I made two cake mixes (as some have said) and then made extra cupcakes. After making this a few times if I'm just making it for our family I'll just do the one cake mix and have it be a little shorter (1"-2") but if I have to feed a large group I'll do two cake mixes so that the cake is a little taller but so I also have cupcakes to feed the masses.
I liked the reviewer that "glued" scrapbook paper to it with frosting. The first time I frosted the bottom (not piped) and I didn't like how it turned out. The second and third time I didn't frost the bottom just the top and it looked cuter and was just fine! Next time I'll try the paper and see if that works.
Bottom line: I would buy this pan again. More fun than just a square/rectangle cake but not so hard to do that you have to be a professional to make it look nice--I'm a mom and I did it! :)
Oh, one more thing that I like is the giant muffin pans...check those out! They make great large individual cupcakes more like what you get at the fancy cupcake stores. Love them! :)Baker's Secret 116466007 Basics Nonstick 6-Cup Texas Muffin Pan oh and the liners Norpro 3600 Giant Muffin Cups, White
Customer Review: Cute cake but not without its flaws Summary: 4 Stars
I knew this cake pan would be a huge hit the moment I saw it on here with all the examples and the limitless possibilities. First the good, the cake is adorable even before you add anything to it, it is a large cake that feeds about 6-8 people -if everyone gets a generous slice ;) Since a giant cupcake is always a hit with kids you can make it to celebrate almost any occasion or holiday. You must use a grease to get the cake out but I am not deducting any points from this as anyone who has tried to get cakes out knows if just goes much smoother if you use a cake release agent. We use the wilton cake release and have had no problems getting cakes out. I was worried about getting the top of the cupcake out without mauling it so we used the cake release freely. Once the cake was done and cooled for a few min it came right out and hld its shape. Now onto the cons of the cake pan. First is it takes about 1 1/2 box cakes so the cook time is around 70 min. Not a big deal just make sure you allow that into your schedule. The other thing I wasn't wild about was when you cut the cake it cuts long pieces that makes it difficult to get icing on more than just the top small part of the cake. We over came this by leaving a bowl of icing next to where the cake was served so someone who wanted to add icing could. Since you will have cake batter left it is easy to make cupcakes to go along with the large cake to help make sure you have enough cake to go around. In my case I saved those for my 4 yr old daughter to decorate and she had a blast piping on icing and being a part of decorating. All in all this is a cute cake pan and was a huge hit. Since we made homemade icing it didn't hold the piping as well as I would have liked but that has more to do with not allowing the icing to chill that the cake pan, I just wanted to add that so one would have better results when piping on icing than we did.
Customer Review: How Could You Not Love This Pan!!? Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this pan for our twins' First Birthday party. I made a pink one for her and a blue one for him!! I first tried the recipe that came with the pan - the chocolate pound cake - and wasn't happy with the texture or flavor. Then I tried a recipe in my collection which added hot fudge, chocolate milk and chocolate chips to a box mix. Followed everyone's suggestions (thank you!!) to fill the bottom portion and bake it for 12 min first, then greased the top portion, filled it and back into the oven. My total bake time was 65 minutes and it came out great!! To decorate, I made a little well in the bottom portion to fill with icing, since the outside wouldn't have any, then, with a thin layer of buttercream on the bottom, I covered it with a sheet of colored fondant. I used my bench scraper to make indentations in the grooves around it to mimic a creased cupcake paper. Then i put the top layer on and swirled on my tinted buttercream. I used the Wilton giant confetti for the sprinkles. For the "one candle", I made two giant number "1"s out of pastillage (sugar dough) to put on each cupcake. (and used the Wilton icing colors to paint them.... I was able to make these weeks in advance!)
They turned out great and they match the party invitations perfectly! I would definitely recommend this pan to anyone who loves to be creative and likes to make a statement!! There's so much you can do with it! Have fun!!
And don't worry about the pan not coming with directions - there's so much info on the internet anyway - who doesn't come here for advice before creating a masterpiece? : )
Customer Review: BEST PAN EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, sorry people who gave bad reviews..your on CRACK! This pan ROCKS!! I used the baker joy flour/oil spray and cake fell out of pan by itself. Was a bit overdone on one side but I saw later that some people cooked one side first for a while then the other. I'll probably cook the first side 5 or 10 min then fill the smaller side. Cake came out perfectly otherwise. You have to trim the ops to get a flat surface to connect the 2 pieces but even my 'normal' cakes dome so I always cut the tops to make them flat, not biggie. The best thing i can say for you is to try this recipe. I didnt want to use a 'normal' box cake because i had to transport this cake and I thought it would be too soft to stand being juggled. I didnt want to make a pound cake from scratch either. I settled on this, and you can do it with any boxed cake flavor. It makes a denser cake than a normal box but not QUITE a pound cake density either. Just right for transporting and very tasty! Hope you like the giant cupcake pan as much as I do! I used a regular cake mix, which produced six cups of batter. I poured 3 1/2 cups of batter in the "bottom" portion of the mold, and 2 cups of batter in the "top" of the cupcake.
When I use a cake mix, I use the mix with 1/3 cup softened butter, 1 cup of milk and 4 eggs.
This produces a fine, moist crumb texture, much like a pound cake. And I found this produces a better cake for this pan than following the usual ingredients called for on the back of the cake mix box.
Customer Review: Very fun cake mold! Summary: 5 Stars
I used this giant cupcake mold for my son's first birthday cake. It was really fun to make and decorate, and turned out great! I just used a store-bought cake mix (chocolate) and the cake itself turned out fine. Although the top of the cupcake does cook faster than the bottom, it's not so much faster that there was any noticeable dryness in the texture. I filled the top portion 3/4 full and the bottom 1/2 full with batter. The one downside to the pan is that the center of each portion really balloons up with steam during cooking, so to put it together, you will have to even off each part by cutting some off. On the bright side, you'll get a little snack out of it!
For decoration, I made a large batch of cream-cheese frosting and colored 1/3 green, 1/3 blue, and left 1/3 white. I piped on the green and white, alternating, on the bottom half. This made it look like a paper cupcake pan liner. I piped the blue frosting on the top in a giant swirl. I used Necco wafers to decorate the top, like giant sprinkles. Mike and Ike's would also be good here, like giant jimmies. Final touch--a large size candle to keep with the proportions. (see the customer images for the final result!)
Everyone was really impressed with the cake and one person even asked where I'd bought it! I would definitely make this cake for other kids' events, or for friends who love cupcakes. Very fun!
