Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Whirlpool Motor / Pump Drive Coupler 285753Customer Review: Highly Recommended Summary: 5 Stars
When my "made by Whirlpool" washer failed last week as the spin cycle began I heaved a sigh and later did a little research online for troubleshooting the problem. I had not yet opened the machine for a look because my space is so limited (especially in winter) but this part was high on the suspect list.
As in past years I started looking at a couple of the large online appliance part portals. They have served me well in the past as a source of parts and information, often sharing free schematics, and I will continue to patronize them when needed because of that kind of support, and the more extensive part availability.
This time though I couldn't resist the excellent savings on this part. At the price of the motor coupling through Amazon I didn't mind gambling that this was the right part, since it meant I had a chance of getting lucky and fixing the machine the first time I opened it up.
As others have said, I found some very helpful video online. I do have a lot of mechanical experience, but I would strongly encourage anyone with a bit of handyman aptitude to do this repair for themselves. I am happy to report that this job did actually take much less than an hour, even with a bit of fumbling and cleaning.
One IMPORTANT NOTE I will emphasize is that the vendor links for this item do not all represent the same item, although they should all work. Each coupler consists of 2 plastic cogs and a center isolator. In the original version of the motor coupler the cogs do not have the thin metal sleeve that fits around the motor shaft. My all-plastic cogs worked for quite a few years before breaking, but many do not, and I must recommend choosing the newer version with the metal sleeve.
However I did encounter what one other user commented, that the new cogs did not easily fit on the shaft. In my case I didn't grind them down, but just firmly drove them onto the shaft using a socket on a wrench extension. Using such force could damage a cog if you aren't careful. Maybe they didn't recast the original plastic cog, but just added the metal insert to the original specification? It's okay because it works. Just want to give a heads up about a possible tight fit.
