Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Whirley-Pop Theater Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn PopperCustomer Review: The gears *will* break, but here's what you do: Summary: 4 Stars
Give the Wabash people a call. They will ask you when you bought the popper and they will register your product. Then they will send you a brand new lid no questions asked. They will continue to do this for the next 25 years. I wish the entire gear system was made of metal, but with impeccable customer service like Wabash provides, I can overlook that.
As for the popper itself, the other reviews pretty much cover it. More fun and healthier than microwave popcorn and easier to store than a hot air job. I use 1/8 cup olive oil to 1/2 cup popcorn and don't even bother turning the gear until I hear the first kernel explode. I'm hoping this will save wear and tear for next time. I melt a tablespoon or two of butter over the top just 'cause I like the taste and add a little salt right in the kettle (be sure to use a potholder...it's hot!). Once the popcorn is gone, I fit the lid back on and stick it back under the cabinet. I don't even bother to wipe it out. Keeps it nice and seasoned!
Customer Review: 'Old Fashioned Popcorn' Summary: 4 Stars
I bought two of these popcorn popper sets as gifts last year and both were liked very much by the recipients. I bought four this time, including one for myself as I'm not a fan of microwave or hot air popcorn. The popper works great other than once in a while a kernel will get stuck under the turning wand. A little shake of the pan will usually dislodge it. Using the included popcorn/oil/seasoning packets, every single kernel will usually pop. Interesting that the enclosed book says not to season until after popping but the seasoning is included IN the popcorn packet with no such admonition. The packets make a full kettle of popcorn with, though I haven't measured it, about 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels. This is easily enough to serve three or four people. It is not as easy to clean as the blurbs indicate because oil does get into the hinges of the cover so I'd pass on 'wiping clean' and give the entire thing a good hot soapy wash to make sure you don't end up with rancid oil in the cover.
Customer Review: great popcorn experience can be found here... Summary: 5 Stars
I have had a whirley-pop for about 10 years now and I still use it. Stove-top popped corn just cannot be beat. It takes about 3 minutes to pop 6 quarts which is actually faster than the microwave. I haven't had any issues with quality of the popper after all these years. Be sure to clean it after use. If you just wipe it down good directly after, that is all you need to do since this is more the old-fashioned approach of a 'seasoned' pan. You should be able to find butter-flavored popping oil with the popcorn in the local grocery store along with popcorn salt which is finer so better suited. Do not overfill! Move off of heat as soon as it is done.
(Side note: I have read some cautions about aluminum and alzheimer's here on Amazon's product reviews. One might want to personally research that topic. Might want to include the alzheimers.org website in the research. Aluminum is found in many natural sources too - like tea.)
Customer Review: Friday Night Is Whirley-Pop Night Summary: 5 Stars
Okay. So my family is nuts about whirley pop. This is the way to make popcorn. We used to have an air popper and I was never fully impressed with it because it spits the popcorn out as soon as it pops and that is not quite enough time to make the popcorn not chewy. The whirley pop allows the popcorn to cook just the perfect amount of time to be done just right. The moisture vents on top let the moisture out which is also essential to good popcorn. I like being able to use my organic popcorn in the popper. A couple of things that I would advise. It does need a good cleaning at the start as there is a lot of dark grease from production. Also the metal hands that spin the popcorn were not bent down to allow the proper stirring of the popcorn. It would just float on top of the unpopped kernels. Anyways, it took me a couple of tries to figure this out and then I bent them with my hands and it worked perfect!
Customer Review: Buy this Popcorn Popper! Summary: 5 Stars
I love popcorn. let's get that straight from the beginning. Movie theater popcorn is good, albeit a little salty, but isn't that what we're looking for at home? Those of you still eating microwave popcorn, STOP. Buy this Whirly Pop Popcorn Popper now. I have a friend who has one and two others who use variations of this to pop their corn at home. They have encouraged me on many occasions to stop using microwave popcorn. I just didn't get it. I thought popping on the stove would be too much trouble or I'd end up with kernels that were burned on the bottom. Not even close! I have used this only 3 or 4 times, but the popcorn comes out perfect every time, tastes delicious and is easy to make. I'm glad I got the theater gift set, but I look forward to experimenting with my own oils and salt. The gift set popcorn is a tad salty for my tastes. I highly recommend this product!
