Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of West Bend 84716 Versatility 6-Quart Oval Slo-CookerCustomer Review: Most versatile cooker ever Summary: 5 Stars
I love this slow cooker. It can brown things in on the stove before setting it on its heating base. It can be used in the oven but the main reason I bought it is to prevent heating up the house and it does that successfully. Although it holds 6 quarts, its shape makes it seem smaller. It is definitely easy to store. I have only had it about a month and have used it at least six times since then. It is also very easy to clean. Its non stick surface really is non stick. The temperature controls are accurate and it doesn't burn things from the side like other slow cookers. It heats from the bottom. As a result, it is easy to cook smaller quantities in it than 6 quarts. I am even taking it on a family vacation to a cabin already appointed with cookware simply because it is so versatile I know I will be using it.
Customer Review: Where has this been? Summary: 5 Stars
Like several other Amazon.com reviewers, we had a West Bend slow cooker that is well over 30 years old with a base held together by duct tape until the heating unit finally came loose. We have not wanted to buy any of the numerous products that have glass inserts because they are not nearly as convenient for putting on the stove for rapid heating. Yet the West Bend that sits on a base is never seen in our area stores, so I had assumed that they no longer existed. I was delighted to see it on Amazon.com and am completely satisfied with the new one. Indeed, its oval shape and somewhat shallower design than our earlier one makes it easier to cook large items and the glass top is an improvement on the metal cover in our old one. Even if it lasts only half as long as our first one, it will have been well worth the money.
Customer Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
My slow cooker arrived, as others described, with the incorrect instruction and recipe manual. The temperature knob was damaged and broken as well. West Bend was very helpful in replacing the knob for free. What I was not aware of, was that the knob damage also indicated that the temperature gauge was messed up. Only after several tries cooking pot roasts that took THREE DAYS to cook even on the highest setting, did it occur to me that the temperature of the plate was damaged and was too low even at the highest temperature. I don't have experience with slow-cookers, so I had assumed I was doing something wrong. I sent the bottom back to West Bend who agreed to replace it free of charge, but I'm still waiting. I give them points for customer service. I wish I had paid more attention to other commenters.
Customer Review: Recently purchased this March 2006/LOVE IT Summary: 5 Stars
This slow cooker was recommended by a website I frequent daily and I wanted a new one so I went to Amazon to check out customer comments. I decided to buy it based on their comments. Just a few things to say. First, I LOVE this slow cooker!! I received it in March 1,2006 so I may have a newer one I guess and I did not find the cord was too short at all for me. The control knob is not at all flimsy but quite sturdy. The pan itself is quite substantial. I have used it three times already and nothing has burned, everything I cooked came out perfectly cooked and quite tasty. The glass lid has an "inner lip" that keeps it from falling into the pan. I was very happy to find that the handles indeed stayed cool even after 8 hours of cooking. Clean up was such a breeze. I HIGHLY recommend this cooker.
Customer Review: Changed my mind- zero stars Summary: 5 Stars
Two years ago I wrote a glowing review about this product and gave it 5 stars (the editing feature here won't let me change the stars, only the text).
I threw it away a couple of months ago and I want to let you know why:
It says it is dishwasher safe, but after a few months I noticed that the nonstick coating was wearing off in the inside! Eww... that's not supposed to be safe, is it?
I grew pretty nervous about cooking with it, if the coating came off so easily. I tried using those new plastic crockpot liners with it, but then decided that defeated the purpose of wanting to cook economical meals, if I always had to buy those bags!
The nonstick coating is not robust if you want to use it 1-2 times a week and clean it in the dishwasher, as I did.
