Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of West Bend 77205 Electric Can Opener, WhiteCustomer Review: Simply Put, It's a Smart Design Summary: 5 Stars
I have been fighting with can openers for quite some time. I went with the portable cordless battery operated can opener for the last 4 years, but I had to buy one every 2 years because the non replaceable battery would wear out. The convenience of cordless started to ebb considering that a wall plug can opener can last you 20 years. It becomes part of the family. I noticed in Amazon the other reviewer were raving about this West Bend, so I decided to give it a try, and am glad I did. People were talking about the no splash feature. West Bend simply placed the magnet over the lid, with a spring, so it does not compress the lid while it is opening, waiting for the fast snap jerk when the opening process comes to an abrupt stop, preventing the contents of the can from splashing over onto the counter. I have now opened 50 cans, and have not experienced one drop of splash. As a matter of fact the lid magnet stays out of the way while you are opening, so if you are intending to use the lid as a strainer, to drain the contents of the can, you are not fighting with a magnet attached to the lid after it is open. With a simple tap on top of the chrome plated dome that holds the magnet, it grabs the lid for removal. So you can conveniently go both ways.
I open the full size can of Del Monte Fruit Cocktail with no problem. The very large can of beans, that is the bulk economy size, that kind of big, you do have to gently place a finger on top of the opener so it will not tip over. 99 percent of the cans that I open on a regular basis do not need any assistance at all. It is a substantially well made unit, with a hefty amount of weight for normal use.
I find it attractive also. I chose white which goes with my existing appliances. It does not look cheap at all. I wouldn't hesitate to be proud to show it off next to the white Kitchen Aid Blender.
Another performance note; It opens the cans without a glitch. You start the can, and it goes around every time, without having to start it over again, or worse yet, losing a grip. It works perfect every time. Begins, runs smooth, and click it's done.
You'll never have to clean your can opener again. The entire unit, with gears and all, comes completely off the front, with a simple push of the chrome button on top of the housing. It falls right into your hand, pop it in the dishwasher for the complete cleaning. No having to get out the toothpick, or used toothbrush to clean it. The whole thing goes into your dishwasher. So the only surfaces that you may want to clean are the base, which is nice flat surfaces to wipe off. No hidden nooks and crannies for dirt to hide in. Plus with the no splash feature, you never have dirt getting on there in the first place.
All in all a really great unit, no wonder so many people are raving about it.
