I am so disappointed with this coffee maker. I was in the market for a large capacity maker and read all the reviews. I bought this one based on MANY positive reviews and it was a bonus that it was so cheap. In fact, I questioned its quality based on price and I was right. You get what you pay for.
I brewed my first batch and knew it was junk. The coffee tasted of metal. But I figured maybe it was only the first use so I would try again. I meticulously followed the cleaning instructions and despite that, I got calcification / mineral deposits in the urn after one use. I don't throw ANYTHING away. I will begrudgingly throw this out.
I rely heavily on amazon reviewers and have never written one...this waste of time and money has compelled me to save others from the mistake I made.

I had a similar model that that gave 10 years of excellent service, heating water for tea and keeping it hot for long periods. Unfortunately the spout started to leak so I had to replace it. I used this new product twice, for heating water, and then it died. The customer service reps told me it was designed to be used only for coffee, and they claimed that using it for water actually voided the warranty. My instruction manual did not give any indication at all that the product should not be used for water. It seems to me that, since so many people use these for purposes other than making coffee, and since other brands can be used for these purposes, the description on Amazon.com should disclose that the West Bend has limited uses.Customer Review: Satisfied Senior

As the head of our senior citizen Refreshment Committee, I was shopping for a 30 cup percolator after ours burned out. It served us well. Then my adventure began. They were
nowhere to be found. All I found were more up to date models of coffee makers or others were 40 cups or more and the prices were outrageous. After exhausting all my energy I turned to Amazon.com and WHA LA! Not only did I find an exact replacement, but there was free shipping and no tax. I along with all the members of my club are delighted to be back in business. In the future I will look at Amazon before I wear out my shoe leather and my energy and I surly will recommended Amazon.com to all my senior friends.

These West Bend urns are great. I'm writing because I have read in several reviews that some people replaced their perfectly-good urns because the cord wore out or the inner tube got lost.
There are places online where one can purchase replacement parts (possibly also from West Bend themselves). For a few dollars, you can get a new tube, cord, lid, etc.
In addition, many hardware stores sell cords in various lengths that work in these urns. Speaking of cords: I would never use an extension cord with an appliance that generates heat. And, if you're going to use a timer, make sure that it's a heavy-duty one that can handle the wattage.

I used it to heat water for tea and instant coffee. The first time I used it, I filled it about 1/3 full, and there was horrible brown stuff up to the water line. I washed it very well and used it again, filling it a little higher this time. The discoloration was bad, but not quite as bad - you could see both lines. After calling the company and being told I should return it to the "store", I went online and Amazon immediately sent me the shipping label and it was returned for free. I love Amazon. I would not buy this again. Now I have to find a proper pot for keeping water hot for a whole day.
