Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Waring WPB05BC Professional Quality Bar Blender, Brushed ChromeCustomer Review: Motor Burns Out Repeatedly; Warranty is Little Comfort. Summary: 2 Stars
I liked the look of this blender, with the brushed chrome and simplified controls. I had read several reviews that talked about motors burning out, but I took the chance anyway. Oy! I bought this blender last July, so we've had it for almost a year now. I use it 5 days a week to make smoothies, so it gets pretty good usage. About 6 months ago, the motor burned out, just like people said it would. Not a huge deal, we have a backup blender...so I contacted Waring, and they told us to send it in, and they'd fix/replace it. I did, and they replaced it promptly. The only downside is that I had to pay a few bucks for shipping. So, here we are, 6 months later. A couple months back, the replacement blender started making a sound, like the fan was scratching against metal. But performance was ok...except for the ubiquitous stank of burning rubber after a couple minutes. This morning, guess what...She died, again, in a big plume of smoke. So, I guess it's time to call Waring, yet again, and get this fixed, yet again, and pay for shipping, yet again. It's all well and good that they replace it when it breaks, but the point is, it shouldn't be burning out like this. If I had to do it again, I'd definitely stay away from this blender. I love the performance, when it's working. It's relatively powerful, though I could actually use a bit more power, especially in the low-end-torque department. When a mixture gets thick, it bogs down pretty easily. Honestly, unless you're using this blender once every 2 weeks, and then, only to blend liquids and semi-solids (ice will KILL it!), then you don't want this blender. No amount of willing replacement services makes up for such a shoddy product, and so help me if they refuse to replace it this time... ***UPDATE 06.29.04*** Well, seems we had a 5-year warranty, so they offered to replace it again. Just our luck, right after the Waring burned out for the second time, our cuisinart 2-in-1 blender/processor did the same thing. This is sad! I packaged up the Waring and sent it back via UPS a couple weeks ago. I just got a call from UPS saying they had broken the blender in shipping, and would issue me the value of the blender within a couple weeks. THANK GOD! I'm doing a friggin' happy dance right now! I am finally released from Waring's clutches! I shall use my UPS claim money to purchase the less-expensive and better-customer-rated Oster Beehive blender, and Waring shall never see my business again! AHA! I HAVE WON! Though, to be fair, it seems like all these blenders have problems, no matter the brand. Oster seems like it's the best rated, though...I'll soon find out. Someday, somewhere, someone will make a blender that doesn't leak, the motor doesn't burn out, the blade doesn't break, and it doesn't cost $400 like a Vitamix. I await that day!
