Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Waring JEX328 Health Juice Extractor

Customer Review: Perfect for me - a beginner
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have never used a Juice Extractor - you will relate to this review. After reading bundles of stuff ABOUT Juice Extractors, I bought my very first one. I chose this one because of the price and the quantity of reviews (thank you so much for the reviews and photos! That's what finally made up my mind.)

The chute easily holds 1/2 small apple, although I'd cut it into thirds if it was a larger apple. As far as power - the Pusher was used much more as a guider to keep the fruit (and carrots) against the blade.

The cup holds a full quart (32 ounces). The footprint on my counter is about the same as a coffee-maker. It is heavy enough to feel sturdy, but light enough for me to easily carry.

Everything locks well, I love the fact that it has a holder for the cup, which keeps it aligned. The feet stay sturdily on the counter, so that isn't a problem either. Cleanup was a DREAM. We wash by hand, so I just put hot soapy water in the sink, and placed the parts into it. When I was done with my juice, a quick wipe, and they were all done. Since I placed them in the water right away, even the parts other people found hard to clean were easy for me.

It does NOT include a recipe book, just some recommended combinations of fruits and/or vegetables. So, if you need help, you'll either need to purchase a cookbook or find some recipes online.

This is the first recipe I made - I got it online. It made about 16 ounces - and was delicious.

Apple Pie Juicing Recipes
You can have your apple pie and drink it, too.
* First sprinkle ½ tsp of cinnamon and ½ tsp of nutmeg into your home juicing machine.
* Then make apple juice with 4 large sweet apples and carrot juice with 1 large carrot (saving the pulp for sauce).
* You'll end up with 2 cups of delicious apple pie juice that you can serve over ice.
* Drink immediately.

*Note - the pulp was dry enough that I would add juice back into it to make apple/carrot sauce, so I feel I got enough juice out of it to make it worthwhile for casual juicers.

I used both Fuji and Gala - 2 each of small apples, and the recipe did indeed make the two cups - notice I said two cups, NOT two servings, I drank it all myself. :-) Delicious!

Customer Review: First-time Juicer
Summary: 5 Stars

So, this is my first juicer purchase. I can't compare the Waring to other juicers, but it worked perfectly and is competitively priced.

Out of the box impressions: It was about 25% larger than I expected (picture posted to compare to single-serving Keurig coffee-maker). Assembly was easy. The directions were simple and clear, and, fortunately, provide you step-by-step instructions on use (not just assembly, disassembly, and cleaning), including how to feed common items into the machine. The instruction booklet also contains some sample recipes, which is nice, as the internet juice recipe sites are ad-riddled and/or written by people a bit more into that juice/detox lifestyle than I'm looking to commit to, and I wasn't sure where to begin. Great-looking piece of equipment, as expected and pictured.

First use impressions: Very easy to use. Similar in sound and time to a garbage disposal. I didn't notice any oily smell--just juice. I got one teeny-tiny bit of blowback from a cucumber before I got the feed tube over it. I got a full 16 ounces of juice from 4 carrots, 3 celery heart stalks, 1 fuji apple, and a third of a medium-sized cucumber. Clean up is reasonably easy (there is a lot of pulp in the collector, which is kind of gross); all the parts in contact with the food and juice that require cleaning are machine-washable, but they will take up more than half of the top rack of a standard dishwasher (also pictured).

First taste impressions: I expected disaster on my first attempt (4 carrots, 3 celery heart stalks, 1 fuji apple, 1/3 cucumber). With a squirt of lemon juice, it was actually somewhere between okay and good. I'll cut back on the celery next time, and probably just make half as much.

Bottom line: From start (cutting up and cleaning produce) to finish (all parts rinsed and in dishwasher), it took me about 20 minutes. With regular use, I expect that time would be cut in half. If you're like me, and want to experiment with making juice a couple of days a week, I doubt you could do better for price and performance. You'll probably even be pretty happy with the end product. Clean up isn't an excusable deterrent either. This juicer offers a do-able way to try adding juice to your diet without a tremendous front-end investment.

Customer Review: Don't let the low price fool you--this is a great juicer!
Summary: 5 Stars

Smart shopper that I am, I checked out all the reviews of various juicing products that I could find before zeroing in on this one. After all my research, I decided that this one seemed to be the best value and most useful version on the market, and--crossing my fingers--I ordered it. WHAT A GREAT BUY.

Things I was worried about before purchasing included noise (I have 2 small children, and I don't relish the notion of waking and/or frightening them every time I get a hankering for fresh juice), size (our family of 4 shares a compact 1-bedroom apartment with limited kitchen space), and ease of cleaning (we have no dishwasher and a microscopic sink--just large enough to wash up the dinner dishes, one plate at a time!)

Having been exposed to various models and types of juicers in the past while working for families that practically considered juicing a religious pursuit, I knew how complex and cumbersome these beauties can be. Therefore, I was prepared to be disappointed by a loud, messy, difficult-to-operate monstrosity, if that turned out to be the case. I am QUITE pleasantly surprised by this product, for the aforementioned and similar reasons. Unlike other juicers I have seen, it is compact, relatively easy to disassemble/clean/reassemble, and makes remarkably little noise for the work it does. I made today's batch of apple-celery-carrot juice while my 7-month-old was napping in the next room and had the juicer cleaned, dried, and ready to go again before the juice had all been drunk. That's a considerable compliment, since the juice was DELICIOUS and disappeared in a heartbeat!

So far, I can come up with nothing negative to say about the Waring Health Juice Extractor, but if I think of something, I'll be sure to share the news. In the meantime, I'll be busy dreaming up new concoctions to make in my cool new juicer and admiring the statement this silver-and-onyx treasure makes on my kitchen counter! Two thumbs up!

Customer Review: Great juicer for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

My understanding is that there are basically 3 types of juicers:
- Masticating - like a Champion Juicer
- Centrifugal - like this one
- Citrus only types

Masticating juicers are generally thought of as the best type, but they are more expensive - around $$. If money is no object, a Champion Juicer is probably the way to go.

But, since money was an object for me, I got this one. We have used it almost everyday for about 6 months with great results. The primary thing that we juice is carrots - usually about 20 large carrots each day, and it handles these carrots with no problems. I am very satisfied with this juicer, and I would buy it again.

A few other notes -

Noise. I do find it moderately noisy, but it's so fast that I'm done juicing before it bugs me or anyone in the house.

Cleaning. There are five parts to clean - the lid, the strainer, the pulp collector, the juice collector (looks like a stainless steel cup), and the pusher. The pusher, the lid, and the juice collector are a breeze to clean - about 15 seconds each. The pulp collector is fairly easy to clean (it detaches) but it does have a few small areas which the enclosed brush helps to clean - takes about 1 minute. The strainer is hard to clean without a brush. The brush that comes with is very small, maybe too small for daily use cleaning the strainer, but if you get a larger kitchen brush, the strainer cleans easily - about 1 minute. All together, around 3 minutes to clean.

Other minor notes. The juicer has rubber nobs on the bottom, so it doesn't move on the counter when it's running, which is nice. The juice collector (cup) does move a little sometimes when juicing, so you have to keep an eye on it so it doesn't slip off. The pulp collector does fill after about 10 large carrots, but it's easy enough to take the lid off, dump the pulp, and start again - takes about 10 seconds.

All in all, a great juicer for the price!

Customer Review: What's in your fridge?
Summary: 4 Stars

Two words could sum up what's in my fridge. Fruits & vegetables.

Ever since I bought this juicer a couple of weeks ago, I find myself going to the grocery store and buying an assortment of fruits & veggies to try different juice combinations. I use the juicer everyday for apples, oranges, pineapple, carrots and celery. My favorite drink is 2 carrots + 1 apple + 1 orange + 2 celery sticks. I've juiced peaches and papaya, but I'd rather just eat them - remember, the juicer weeds out the pulp, which contains most of the fiber. The juice does contain all the vitamins & minerals, but the fiber content is little to none. If you want to get the added benefit of a fibrous diet, add the pulp to your soups or stocks.

A great thing about having a juicer at home is that I can buy quantities in bulk. In the past, I've been wary of buying pre-packaged stalks of celery, for example, for the fear that they may go limp. But now, I juice 2-3 sticks of celery every time I use the juicer, so it works out great.

The juicer itself is quite powerful and juices all the aforementioned fruits & veggies with ease. Carrots give a lot of pulp, so you'll have to juice a lot of carrots if you want a tall class of just carrot juice. All the elements of the juicer - the pulp collector, the mesh, the juicer collector, the top, the pusher - come apart easily and can be washed/rinsed individually. The brush that comes with the juicer is perfect for cleaning the mesh (although other reviewers have mentioned that they use toothbrushes instead). Cleaning the pulp collector can be a little painful at times, but I'm usually done cleaning everything in less than 2 minutes.

I would've rated it as 5 stars, but I wish cleaning the pulp collector were easier. In all fairness though, this is my first juicer, so I have no frame of reference. I'd recommend this juicer to anyone. Here's to your morning tonic!
