Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Waring DF250 1800-Watt 2-1/5-Pound-Capacity Deep Fryer, Brushed StainlessCustomer Review: Disappointing Summary: 2 Stars
I've been using a Tefal 'MaxiFry' dry fryer for some time but it had two 'problems' that prompted me to look for an alternative: it was difficult to clean and the lowest temperature setting was 302°F. I like to blanch potato fries at a low temperature before I crisp them up at a high temperature - purely a matter of personal taste. This was not possible on the Tefal as it could not be set to lower temperatures.
After reading various product descriptions and reviews it quickly became apparent that Waring apparently had the best products - albeit at a cost. I looked at the DF200 and DF250 but nowhere could I find an explanation for the differences between them so I opted for the DF250 as it was the only one mentioned on the Waring website and so I assumed it would be the later model.
At the price I paid (6 times what I paid for the Tefal) my expectations were high - it seemed to do what I was looking for: easy to clean in a dishwasher and operation down to 175°F. Unfortunately I was disappointed with this product for the following reasons:
1. Amazon clearly states on their website that the DF 250 has a food capacity of 3.75 pounds (it even says this in the image below the box I'm typing in) but the Waring packing and manual lists this as only 2.2 pounds - significantly less than advertised.
2. I was sold on the idea of having an immersion heater to heat the oil as I thought this would be more efficient than an external heater. Unfortunately because this heater occupies so much of the space inside the oil vat, twice as much oil is required, thus this potential benefit of the immersion heater is lost. It also means that the cost of replacing the oil is effectively doubled.
3. The temperature control is awful and seems to swing over a 50°F range - one moment the food is cooking too fast and the next it seems to be cold. I've seen it turn off for 45 minutes once it reached temperature! I don't know if it's really designed this way or there's a fault on the thermostat on this unit. In effect, I'm back to the manual control (flicking a switch on and off) I had to use on the Tefal to maintain a temperature of about 260°F.
4. The basket handle sticks out from the unit (and out from the counter top) and so it would be very easy to to catch this as someone walked by. I would be very concerned about young children around this unit when the oil is at 375°F. Ihe Tefal had a nice safe fold-away handle.
5. The next issue may seem a bit trivial but it annoyed me. The large lid on the DF250 is removable. In fact it needs to be removed in order to practice safe cooking techniques (like slowly immersing fries into hot oil). So where should a very hot big lid be safely put down? You will need some extra space around this unit to operate it and have something to put the lid on that will not be damaged by the hot metal. On the Tefal, the lid hinged up.
Having stated the above, the unit does cook food nicely - it's a shame that I have to stand guard over it and continually adjust it while in use.
For this price I expected better. My old Tefal looks good in comparison.
