Customer Review: Essential Item for Wine Lovers

Young red wines often need aeration, frequently accomplished by decanting and leaving them to sit for a few hours (older wines not so much - particularly very old bottles that excessive aeration can actually harm - although they should be decanted to avoid sedimentation). I have really enjoyed using this funnel, a take on a very old design concept. It's worked well with relatively young (I would not use it on wines over 10 years old) big red wines (Rhone wines,other syrah/shiraz, young cabs) and has cut the aeration time down significantly. Oh, and it also makes a beautiful show when pouring a dark red wine through it into a decanter. After pouring, I leave it in the top of the decanter to keep any unwanted items (insects, dust, children's toys) from falling in the wine while it continues to aerate in the decanter for a while.
One note on the filter - its great for picking up large wine debris, but would not be effective in filtering out fine sediment.
As for cleaning, its a snap. I just run cold water through the filter and screen, dry and I'm ready for the next time. I do not recommend using detergent on the device or on decanters in general as the residue can affect the taste of the wine. Besides if you rinse them out right after use, before the wine reside on them dries, there is really no need to scrub them out.
In short, I really like this aerator and it has quickly become a key component of my wine preparation.
