Customer Review: Country of Origin Misleading

The description of this item as well as the company headquarters leads one to believe that this item is made , if not in Germany, somewhere in the EU. In fact, when the item arrived, I was surprised to see a "made in China" sticker on it. I contacted another distributor about this, one that imports a lot of German products, and they wrote back:
"Most of the WMF Kitchen tools are now made in China or Indonesia, using the same proprietary WMF Chromargan® Stainless Steel. Production is always under the strict guidelines established by WMF and always under the exacting observation and inspections by German Engineers who oversee production.
As one WMF official explained to me when I questioned this practice, if manufacturing were 100% "Made in Germany" each tool would cost 4 times (or more) than it does today. It is actually cheaper to ship the steel to Asia and have it tooled there than it is to do it all in Germany.
Most Germans probably believe that all WMF is still manufactured in Germany. That is because Germany does not require the country of origin to be declared. The US passed a law with that requirement in 1891 or there-about.
We do get this question a lot, but I must say we have never had anyone return any WMF kitchen tool because of defects. The design & engineering is 100% German. By the way, the Pressure Cookers are still 100% "made in Germany". "
The item probably would work out ok, but since I was specifically looking for an EU-made cooking tool, I returned it. Hence the 3 star rating.
