Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of WMF Easy Pour Decanter

Customer Review: Nice decanter, bad design
Summary: 2 Stars

I picked up this decanter a few months back based on the cool design and good reviews. The quality is fine, and the decanter does a good job giving the wine a nice wide surface area to aerate. If anyone is looking at this decanter, I'd strongly suggest picking up one with a narrower design.

The same sleek design that made me buy it in the first place also makes it pretty much impossible to clean. I picked up one of the decanter drying racks, and even with that you can never get all the water out. Droplets form on the inside edges and just won't evaporate out whether the decanter is bottom side up or drying up side down. After a few weeks of use (I was decanting a few bottles a week), I started to get a little mold on the inside surface and bought a decanter cleaning device (like a thick pipe cleaner) which helped, but still made it hard to get clean due to the shape.

I eventually began drying it out completely by putting it on a warm stovetop and heating any water left inside after cleaning. Not surprisingly, it ended up exploding one day all over the stove.

I won't be getting another one of these... I'll probably end up picking up one of the Vinturi aerators since it's less waiting and easier cleaning.

Customer Review: A Great Product Gone Bad -- Don't Buy Until It Is What It Once Was
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought an WMF decanter about three years ago and would have rated that one 5 stars. It was beautiful -- wonderful lines, heavy glass, lovely etched WMF at the base, and, most importantly, it worked perfectly to aerate the wine quickly and poured without the tiniest drop spilling down the body of the decanter.

Unfortunately, my original one was broken. I immediately ordered another, but, to my great disappointment, the company had decided to knock off its own product.

The new version has similar but not the same lines (the shape is not nearly so lovely, nor does the indent at the bottom have the same exquisite incline), the glass is thin, and, most importantly, the thing drips, leaving spots on the table cloth and rings on the counter.

I returned the item, which I didn't want to give even a single star but had to because without rating an item a review cannot be posted.

I sorely miss my original WMF easy pour decanter and hope that the company will return to making a product both lovely and functional.

Perhaps if enough customers who bought the original complain the company will again make what was, but no longer is, a marvelous product.

Customer Review: Can't recommend
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this decanter based on the many positive reviews, but now I wish I had paid a little more attention to the negative ones. First the pros:
- It's a very wide decanter, giving a lot of surface area to the wine so that aeration is accomplished very easily.
- Very sturdy. You don't get the feeling that it's going to break with the slightest amount of pressure as you do with some other decanters.
- It really is a good looking piece - especially at such a low price.

The Cons:
- Although it says "Easy Pour" and it's designed so that you grasp it by keeping a couple of fingers inside the indentation at the bottom, it does tend to be a little awkward. You'll definitely find yourself using two hands to pour.
- It doesn't empty out! This is the biggie for me. As others have already stated, it is nearly impossible to get the last glass of wine out of this decanter without completely inverting it. And, once it's upside down, I guarantee you've got a bit of a mess on your hands. I just don't understand how such a basic design flaw could've been missed. Or, maybe this is why this particular decanter is so deeply discounted?

Customer Review: Almost magical
Summary: 5 Stars

For many years, I thought there's no difference between letting wine breathe in the bottle instead of in a carafe. I even thought it was more elegant to leave the wine in the bottle so people can read the label. So it takes longer... but you know, the carafe really makes a difference. Even if you let it breathe for only a few minutes, wines seem fuller, less tanic.

What looks like the exact same shape carafe is sold by Pottery Barn for 50% more money and that one is molded glass from Turkey. Nothing wrong with molded glass, the wine doesn't know the difference between cheap glass and fine crystal. This item by WMF might be manufactured by the same people, but its being less expensive means you can buy an extra little something.

I love this carafe and so do my husband and their wine collecting and wine making friends.

Customer Review: Wine Decanting
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been making wine for years and love decanting a bottle of wine on special occasions when you have a group of friends over or just wine tasting. But as I said in one of my earlier reviews titled "Funnel away!!" a decanter and a Funnel are very vital pairing to increase your whole wine experience and also get all the wonderful nuances that bottle of wine has. The WMF Easy Pour Decanter is great. I have one at home and one at my wine room and have managed to give a few out to my friends. Sturdy, easy to clean and a great price, I would recommend this decanter to anyone.

I would suggest getting a decanter drying stand if you plan on using it more than just those special occasions. I use my decanter many times a week, so the stand was a must.

*cheers*
