Customer Review: Worthless.

After running this for a week, I am at a loss for words. This machine is completely useless, and has almost no effect on the humidity in my apartment. Sure, it's whisper quiet even at its highest setting, but for all the humidifying it does you may as well leave it off and unplugged. It'll still be quiet, and the effect on your home's humidity will be about the same.
Before I got this machine I was using an old $15 Vicks vaporizor (the kind your parents probably put in your nursery when you were a wee baby), which works fairly well but just wasn't up to the task of keeping my living room at a comfortable level. I have those old-fashioned steam-heat radiators in my apartment (the huge iron ones that get rocket hot to the touch) and it gets very dry in the winter as soon as they come on. So I moved up to the big guns, or so I thought, with the Vornado evaporative humidifier. The box claims it's good for at least 800 square feet (Amazon claims 1000), but my living room is well under 700 square feet, and the Vornado HU1 wasn't able to nudge the humidity up a single percentage point. Not one.
Turns out the crappy old Vicks machine worked several times better. At first I could hardly believe what a poor job the machine was doing, so I spent the last week taking careful notes. Here are my findings:
1. Control: With no humidifier on of any kind, my living room averaged between 16-20% relative humidity. Dry as a proverbial bone.
2. Vicks: With the Vicks plastic vaporizor, I was able to get the relative humidity up to about 30%. Not great, but better than nothing.
3. Boiling water: Next, I put a pot of salted boiling water on the stove; the humidity quickly jumped to about 30%. After leaving it on for a while, I got it all the way up above 40% . . . though it's obviously not a good idea to leave the stove on all day (for numerous reasons).
4. Vornado: After several days on the "high" setting (running constantly with regular refills), the relative humidity rose no higher than 20% -- roughly the same as when I wasn't using any humidifier at all. During the cold mornings, it would drop as low as 16%, even with the Vornado having run all night long.
So sure, it's got a built-in humidistat, different fan settings, and a nice design. It also moves the air around the apartment a bit, which I admit is nice on stuffy winter days when you haven't been able to open a window for ages. But for 70 bucks, you're paying for a fan in a pretty housing that uses a lot of electricity . . . and that's about it.
Ultimate assessment: Complete waste of money.
