Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel For Cats, 5 ozCustomer Review: Pretty good for treating feline herpes Summary: 3 Stars
This gel would be ideal if it were a little thicker and not quite so expensive. I have three cats who all have the feline herpes virus, and I used to use another product and would just put it on their feet and they lick it off, but the manufacturer changed that formulation so I tried Viralys gel. Like I said, if they made it thicker, I could easily slather it on my cats and dispense it to them that way. It's good that this gel is transparent--that way it doesn't stain the carpet if they shake it off. I put a quarter-sized dab on their hindquarters and then they lick it. I recently purchased the L-Lysine powder, for humans (it's a quarter the price of the pet variety) and sprinkle it on their wet food. The downside of using this is that now the cats don't like dry food, and I hate wet food--it's smelly, messy and gives them bad breath. Well, they have to have Lysine somehow so sacrifices have to be made. Again, this gel is pretty good, but too expensive if you have more than one cat and they need to be dosed twice a day.
Customer Review: Even picky cats should like this supplement Summary: 5 Stars
My cats had chronic goobery eyes and sneezing before they went on L Lysine supplements. I tried the powder first, sprinkled on their food. The cats seemed to resist eating until they were starving, and their was often powder left in their bowls. I was skeptical about this product because of the price and possibility that they wouldn't like it, but both cats eat it all. I squeeze their dose right on top of their dry food and never see a trace of it in their bowls. The best part is that I have seen a dramatic improvement in their health. Both cats have clear eyes and their noses to not run, eliminating the constant sneezing. I had only seen mild improvement with the powder - perhaps because they were not getting the entire dose? I have tapered them down to every other day and still have not seen a return of symptoms. Great product. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Very palatable for cats! Summary: 5 Stars
Our two kitties have been on this for 2 months now after some time with the treats but this gets them much more lysine in a smaller amount and when I pick up the tube they literally come running and sit by me meowing 'till I give them some.
They were sick when they were kittens with symptoms like what the Lysine says it will help with and after getting Terramycin for their eyes they got much better. So I cannot say that this cured anything obviously but they have not gotten sick while on it.
What I wanted to point out was its value just as a supplement. The little boy kitty had the worse immune system and always had a rougher coat and had trouble catching up to his sister with growth, etc. His coat is noticeably shinier and softer lately so I definitely think the Lysine has positive side effects!
Customer Review: Not as palatable as the label says... Summary: 1 Stars
I have a kitten that had discharge coming from her eyes and nose, and was sneezing often. My vet suggested I try Viralys, and showed me at her office how much I should use and how to administer it. We both noticed that my kitten was not pleased but decided I would try it given the vet's experience with the product. Unfortunately, it has been very difficult to administer to my cat. She does not like the taste, even when mixed with wet food (she leaves it alone). I tried putting some on her paws but once she tasted it, she left it alone. My older cat does not like the taste either. Had I known that my kitten would be so sensitive to this taste that she didn't like, I would have opted to pulverize lysine pills and sprinkle them on her food instead of spending much more on a messy gel she does not like.
Customer Review: My cats will eat this if mixed into their wet food Summary: 3 Stars
I feed my cats Weruva cat food -- which they LOVE. When I first started using this gel product, I tried to get my cats to lick it up like they do when I give them petromalt for hair balls. They wouldn't have anything to do with it. Then I mixed it into their wet food, and although they sniffed it suspiciously, they finally ate it. It can be messy to use -- it is easy to squeeze out too much, so you have to waste some of the product wiping the excess off the cap. I just started using it, so I can't yet comment on its effectiveness. If it turns out to be effective, when I run out I think I'll spend a little more and buy the paste formula. You can get it in a pump that dispenses a measured dose which will hopefully eliminate the use of a measuring spoon and over dispensing of product.
