Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of VillaWare V2002 UNO Belgian Waffler, RoundCustomer Review: Makes waffles a joy! Summary: 5 Stars
This little machine just works. It heats quickly, takes just a minute or so to cook waffles, and cooks very evenly! It's a real looker, too. It has a power light, and the "ready" light notifies you (along with a loud beep) that your waffle has been cooked to perfection to one of the 7 heat settings. I like crispy waffles, so I usually set mine to 6 or 7. They turn out perfect. For truly crispy waffles, let the waffles cool for a little while on a rack.
It cleans easily. I cannot stress how important it is to follow instructions when taking care of appliances. The ONLY way to clean this is: Let it cool. Wipe with a damp cloth on the outside, wipe the nonstick iron on the inside with a paper towel. If there is something caked on the iron, put some oil on it and wipe it out. So far I have had nothing stick to the iron. Do not use any utensils to remove the waffles that could scratch the nonstick coating! I have been using a large wooden salad fork to remove the waffles, it has worked well.
I love the cord wrap underneath the waffler. The waffler stands on its end for storage and, unless something hits it, it won't fall over. I love that feature in my small kitchen.
My only complaint is that the lettering on the menu - "power," "ready," and the numbers - has started to wear off. But I can forgive that. Also, the recipe book seems to have some hiccups, but still has some goodies.
I received this as a Christmas gift from my husband. It's the gift that keeps on giving!
Customer Review: Great bargain! Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this waffle maker after ours of 10 years finally "kicked it". It's tradition that we make waffles every Sunday before church.
That being said, I wasn't looking to buy the Cadillac (or Mercedes) of waffle makers. To me,it's a WAFFLE MAKER, not a fashion statement!
I read the reviews and so I expected to see a few undesireable traits. Like the setting dial does feel like it's broken, but evidently, that's just the way they make it. It's very loose, but maybe that's also not a bad idea. If you are a connoisseur of waffle color/texture, who needs it "just a pinch" crispier, you're not locked into "this particular setting" or "that one".) Another complaint I read about, is the sound the unit makes when the waffles are done. This person must have either a very quiet house (lucky duck!), or has a thing against buzzers. I have three kids and am usually doing several things at the same time, so for me, this buzzer is of great help, and I avoid burning/wasting our breakfast! It also has a handy cord holder in the bottom of the unit so you can wrap it up(like a hose.) It stands upright for convenient storage.
I've used it three times, and the last time my kids told me they were the best they'd ever had! (Recipe tip: I like to put a pinch of baking powder, a dash of vanilla extract and a splash of lemon juice, and that seems to make a big (delicious) difference! I would recommend this product.
Customer Review: Small Footprint, Great Results Summary: 5 Stars
I bought Model V2002 in Feb 2010 and have no idea how the V2004 differs. This is a quality mostly metal product that makes a great Belgian waffle. Feels very solid. It seems to me the rotating types have more parts and are therefore more likely to fall apart and there is not any evidence that flipping waffles makes them taste better anyway albeit the Villa instruction manual says to serve them upside down. The pros on this unit is its SMALL SIZE (8"x11") taking up little counter space, makes a large 7.5" ROUND waffle, makes a very THICK waffle (about one inch) with very DEEP GROVES (which you typically can't tell from the pics but some waffle irons use plates with shallower groves). A no-brainer to use: It has 2 lights: one light which informs you it is plugged in; a buzzer and the second light turns green light when it reaches cooking temperature; the green light turns red while cooking and then turns green and the machine buzzs again when done. I love the buzz system as I am always multi-tasking. Non-stick plates, easy to clean exterior, a cord management system on the bottom. The only con is that it sort of stands up for storage but is not stable in that position. Tried and true. VillaWare V2002 UNO Belgian Waffler - RoundA very safe choice.
Customer Review: Good unit once it works, poor quality control at factory? Summary: 4 Stars
I bought one of these based on other reviews and off of Alton Brown's recommendation. The first batches if waffles I tried came out light and soggy, nothing like the golden crisp goodness that everyone is describing. It took barely any time for the buzzer to go off saying it was done and I also had a loose cooking selector like someone else mentioned, about 1/2" of play.
Not wanting to wait for a replacement, I took the thing apart to have a look. The loose lever was very simple to fix, it just needed a quick squeeze with a pair of pliers to tighten up the slop. I adjusted the thermostat inside by bending the mechanical stop of the thermostat out of the way and rotating the selector an extra 90 degrees.
After this tweak, I started getting the great golden waffles that everyone talks about. I suspect that there is poor quality control at the factory and that some units were miscalibrated and/or had faulty thermostats. If you are handy with a pair of pliers and screwdriver, it took about 25 minutes to figure out what was going on and how to adjust it. If you don't want to bother, take it back to the store and get another one.
It would have been nice for it to work out of the box for me, I figure I just got the one bad one of the batch. It is a great waffle maker once it works.
Customer Review: A few things you need to know about this waffle iron Summary: 4 Stars
This is a super waffle iron, makes a beautiful Belgian waffle, and is stylish and easy to clean. That's what I was looking for. There are a few things you need to know about it though:
1. The instructions say you only need to coat or spray it once at the beginning of a batch of waffles. You actually need to spray it between each waffle or they will stick.
2. The instructions say to fill the bottom half of the iron with batter until all the peaks are covered. You do need to do this in order not to have holes in your waffle, but be careful not to put any more than just barely covering the peaks, or the batter will spill over a minute or two after you close it, as the waffle puffs up.
3. The printed lettering on the control panel started coming off the first time I used it. I think it may have been from the cooking spray, but then I wiped it with a wet paper towel, and the rest of it came off as easy as nail polish comes off. Granted, once you know how to use it, you don't really need the words "Waffle Tone," "Power," and "Ready" to tell you what the red and green lights mean, but that's really cheap printing. Plus some of the numbers on the darkness dial started to come off on that first use too, and will last maybe a few uses if I'm careful not to wipe them down.
