Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vidalia Chop Wizard

Customer Review: I love the chop wizard!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's almost perfect. I got it so my children could be more "helpful" in the kitchen. They can safely chop apples and potatoes for me. (Ages 3 & 5). They love to eat fruits and veggies they helped to prepare. The really cool thing though is that *I* use it all the time. I can quickly chop lots o' veggies in a uniform size so that everything cooks evenly and looks nice. I use the small grate for matchstick/ julienne type applications and the larger one for more bite size pieces. The only improvement I would make is to make the chopping surface larger- then add more of an assisted lever for the chopping. The chop wizard can handle 1/4 apple or 1/8 large onion easily. It's difficult to chop larger pieces and the container that catches the pieces is a bit small for large volume applications. As a whole, however, if you prepare a lot of produce, it's worth the space in a small kitchen even if you don't like a lot of clutter from too many gadgets.

Customer Review: Use it for what it's made for

I've been using this tool for 5 years, and it finally broke as described many times above, at the hinge. However, for those concerned about the tool's inability to chop a whole onion at once... come on, people; you saw that on an infomercial. I bought this because I lost an arm in an accident and the one I have left was badly broken, so my dexterity is lacking. This tool is perfect for non-fibrous vegetables; that is, don't try to chop ginger root with it, but peppers and onions do well.

Yes, it can take a little force to push a larger vegetable through the grid. So, lean on it. I've actually put mine on the floor and stepped on it to force a potato through the blades, and I EXPECTED it to break. It didn't.

This isn't a magical device. If you don't know how to use a knife safely, then this won't solve that problem. But if your dexterity is a little impaired by, say, arthritis or other condition, this will do the job.

Customer Review: Don't miss this handy kitchen tool!

This is an essential kitchen tool and it really works! It is not magic, you still will need to prepare your vegetables minimally!
Listen, I owned my first chopper for 2 years before the plastic hinge broke. I immediately purchased a second one without any hesitation. BTW the hinge broke because I exerted too much force on the chopper while chopping an overripe orange rind. Here are a few things you need to know:
1. It will chop fresh and firm vegetables. Soft and over ripe vegetables are not successful in this chopper. (Onion, potato, celery, Jalapeno, orange rind, very firm tomatoes, bell pepper, squash, zucchini, etc.)
2. You must minimally prepare your vegetables for ease of chopping and safety.
3. Peel your onions and slice them in half, then slice in thirds, then chop! Be sure that your vegetables do not have hard core pieces or stem parts still attached! These must be removed before chopping!

I received this product as a Christmas gift a few years ago, and thought it was useless before I even opened the box. I didn't use it for two months, at which time I was going to take it to the Good Will. However, I thought I would give it a try before tossing it. I have been using it to make salsa for 3 years now. The hinge did break as you have probably noted in other posts and pictures, but that was due to high use and putting all of my weight on it to push an onion through. I am purchasing a second one soon, as I have 25 tomato plants in my garden, 15 peppers, 50 onions and I won't make salsa without it. I don't know how many quarts of salsa I made last year, but it really makes everything look so nice and even. Potato salad looks great with perfect squares of potatoes. It is so fast and not too hard to clean if you don't misplace the "comb" it comes with. Enjoy, most people like using it!

Customer Review: great!

I waffled back and forth on getting this, and I'm thrilled I finally caved and forked over the $20. It has saved so much prep time. I cook constantly, and I've been able to use this for just about any dicing job (it's not so hot for soft items like bread). This even works on meats, especially if they are slightly frozen. The two blade choices are great. I've only had this for a few weeks, so I can't speak for the durability. However, it seems to be well-made and strong. I recommend this to people all the time, and so far no one has brought a busted-down wreck of a wizard to my doorstep. After I bought this, I checked out other, slightly cheaper store brand versions, and this model feels much sturdier. If you're trying to decide between this one and, say, a $14 model, I'd say spring for the extra few bucks and go with this. I'm planning to give these as gifts to all my friends and family who cook.
