Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vidalia Chop WizardCustomer Review: How did I ever manage without it? Summary: 5 Stars
I admit that I was skeptical about this gadget but I am a raw foodie with chronic illness (including fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome) and I needed some extra help in the kitchen preparing my mountain of veggies so I took a chance on the Vidalia Chop Wizard. Now that I have been using it every day since I received it from Amazon, I am wondering how I ever managed without it? Wow! It really is wonderful, especially for me with the pain in my wrists and fingers. The Vidalia Wizard is easy to use ~ I was afraid I would need extra strength which I don't have in order to close the chopper but that is not the case at all. I precut my veggies as recommended and voila, a nice, neat pile of chop or dice without any extra effort. It's safer for me too considering how my illness effects my knife skills and really saves me from my painful struggles with chopping and dicing. Clean-up is not so bad ~ I take a brush to the chopper lid as a brush is more effective than the little tool that is included with the chopper and if you want, you can put the entire chopper on the top rack of your dishwasher.
I am so excited about my Vidalia, I am going to buy several more as gifts. You can't go wrong purchasing it from Amazon either.
Customer Review: Loved it, BUT the hinge broke off immediately Summary: 3 Stars
The very first time I used the Chop Wizard, the plastic part that sticks out for the cover to hinge on, snapped off (just as other users mentioned). There were so many positive reviews, I decided to buy it anyway.
Before using it, I checked that the lid was firmly seated , as the directions clearly instruct. But when you're trying to quickly chop up a bunch of stuff, you shouldn't have to keep checking the hinge after each use. It performed very well, as far as chopping goes. If you want things cubed, you do have to slice the item to the thickness you desire first, otherwise it makes french fry shaped pieces.
It still works with only a hinge on one side, but I feel that a new product shouldn't break like that and I shouldn't have to put up with it for the rest of the time I use it. I'm sending it back for a refund and looking into buying another product from the same manufacturer...the Chop House. Unfortunately it's not available from Amazon or Target, I have to purchase directly from the manufacturer. It doesn't have a hinge, just a lid that you have to square up and press down on. I suspect the choppping blades will be similiar in function.
Customer Review: Works well but with some cautionary notes Summary: 4 Stars
I admit that this chopper is a bit flimsy because of the plastic. But compared to its steel counterparts, it is much much cheaper. The first few times I used it, I was a bit taken aback by the loud noise it made towards the finishing motion of bringing the chopping mechanism down. I was afraid that the plastic part holding the lid would break as it had for some of the other reviewers. One of the ways I was able to avoid this was to slice whatever I was chopping a bit thinner. I have chopped onions, carrots, celery with no problems. You should not put the whole half onion on it or else it requires too much force and you run into the risk of breaking the chopper. By slicing thinner, I would not recommend anything over 1/2 inch in thickness. By doing this I avoided the large amount of resistance of pushing the lid down towards the end of the motion and hence no loud sound. This also helps to have nicer cubes, anyways. if you are chopping something with different density, then place the object soft side down.
It is very quick and is good for someone who doesn't have expert knife skills. It has saved me countless amounts of time in the prep portion of cooking.
Customer Review: It works! It really works! Summary: 5 Stars
I was skeptical, having been burned in the past by kitchen gadgets that promised to make short work of tasks like chopping and dicing. But after reading the reviews here I decided I'd give this a try. I'm so glad that I did, too!
This thing WORKS. Within moments of its arrival I'd chopped 3 red onions. (I like to stash ready-to-cook ingredients in the fridge to make meal prep faster throughout the week.) Yes, with one particularly large onion I had to quarter it but so what? That takes 2 seconds, and chopping the entire thing took maybe 10 more seconds, for a total of 12 seconds to get 2 cups of chopped onion. Doing that by hand would have easily taken a couple of minutes, so I definitely saved time.
I've since used it on apples, firm-fleshed melon, carrots (slice lengthwise first), potatoes (slice into quarters) and cucumbers (seeded). The Vidalia Chop Wizard made short work of all of them.
The one thing I had problems with was a very ripe tomato. But, hey, even my good chef knife has problems with those now and then.
Best money I've spent on a kitchen gadget. I wholeheartedly recommend this!
Customer Review: WOW - this thing is great! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this product! I'm cooking more and using lots more fruits and veggies, so we're saving money and eating better. It's also fun to use!
I hate chopping of any kind, but especially onions! I have sensitive eyes and end up a wreck if I dare to use anything other than frozen. I would do a lot more cooking if I didn't have to chop up all the fruits and vegetables. The Vidalia Chop Wizard gets me through the dreaded onions before my eyes can tear up. It makes fast work of all my chopping chores, so I've got a healthy, delicious meal on the table in record time.
Seriously, this thing is great! I've had it about a week, and already used it on onions, hot peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro for salsa, as well as sweet peppers, potatoes, strawberries and apples. It's fast, easy, and clean-up is a breeze! Just be sure not to let food dry on the grids, and the little comb they provide with it will get out any food, even the chopped cilantro. This item is well-designed, making every stage of its use a pleasure, and seems quite sturdy to me. Honestly, just try it and you'll be glad you did!
