Picture this: the year is 1982. a young huck is playing in his sandbox outside when his mother hollars from the kitchen window for him to come in for some lunch. It is a warm summer's day. the breeze is slight and the birds are chirping. huck skips across the backyard and enters the kitchen door. mom, smiling at him, asks what he would like for lunch. pb&j? no. kraft cheese singles and saltines? nope. a banana? ahhhhhhh, nothing like a fresh sliced banana for lunch. yes, mommy a banana. sliced. "ok, hunny, go wash your hands and i'll slice it up for you. i love you." i. love. you. those would be the last three words huck would hear from his mother. words that haunt him until this day. see, when huck went to the bathroom to wash up, mother pulled out the only kitchen utensil that she knew of that could slice a banana the proper way for her little pride and joy. a steak knife. humming a favorite motown song she started to slice the banana with this tool of death. halfway through she accidentally lost control of the knife and stabbed herself through the eye and right into the brain. poor little huck walked back into the kitchen still drying his hands only to find his dear mother laying in a pool of coagulated blood with the wooden handle of a cutco serrated steak knife sticking out of her left eye socket. i don't think i need to tell you how his life would have been different had mother owned this banana slicer. rest in peace mom. i love you. always, huck.
