Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vic Firth French Rolling PinCustomer Review: Good basic rolling pin Summary: 5 Stars
I like to bake but usually only stuck to things that didn't need to be rolled out - this was probably because I only had one rolling pin made out of heavy marble that I disliked having to pick up and deal with the handles turning around.
I bought this French rolling pin on a whim because it was inexpensive. It's so light, easy to clean and easy to use that I find myself making and rolling out pizza dough, cookies and other pastries more often. For doughs that need to stay cold I'll probably continue to chill and use the marble pin but for everything else I'm using my new wood pin!
Customer Review: Not just for pie crust! Summary: 5 Stars
The other reviewers are quite right that this pin will get your pie dough smooth and round without all the fuss you are accustomed to. However, you will truly feel tears of joy and gratitude welling up in your eye sockets the first time you roll out a batch of tortilla dough with this handsome little devil. Hallelujah!!! Nothing is more embarrassing than presenting your guests with unshapely flatbreads (burnt because you toiled so long on each that the previous one was neglected on the griddle). This beauty gets it done with speed, dignity, and a touch of sass.
Customer Review: Elegantly Simple Summary: 5 Stars
I agree that this is a great rolling pin.
I have had many different types over the years including marble and ones with gears inside. I purchased this because it was "easier on the earth" with less manufactuing involved. AND, there was nothing to break. I am happy to say that I really do love it and it works better than my previous rolling pins. The only downside is that it is much longer than rolling pins with handles so finding a spot for storage might be a problem. Other than that it is perfect -- nicely made and very smooth.
Customer Review: It works better than a flat pin for round projects Summary: 5 Stars
This pin makes it really easy to roll out dough into a disc on the first try. It makes for very flakey, delicious crusts.
I have used it to take the store bought pie crust, fold it up 4 times, wad up the folded result, then roll it out an extra 2 inches, round. This gives you an amazing tart-like, thin, flakey crust, that you wouldn't expect to get out of store bought garbage.
The less times you work the dough, the flakier and more delicious the crust turns out, and this is the rolling pin to do it.
Customer Review: Rolling pin by a dummer? Summary: 5 Stars
This certainly is a novel item! We gave it as a gift to a friend who is not only a musician but a gourmet cook. The gift recipient was tickled to receive a rolling pin made/designed/endorsed by a drummer! It did take quite a bit of time to arrive but was here in time for holiday gift giving and that was the important part. It is shaped very like a heavy drumstick with the ends cut off so maybe if you get bored rolling dough with it you can drum a few tunes with it to break the monotony.
