My cat had gotten sprayed on his whole WHITE chest.(Skunk spray is pumpkin orange!) Previous to using the Thiotrol Spray, (I had to go on line to order it) I put him in the sink to clean him with a "home remedy". (And that worked fabulous!)He tolerated that procedure well, but I missed an area on his neck. Rather than put him through the trauma of a special bath again, I waited for the Thiortol to arrive. When the Thiortol Spray arrived in the mail, I sprayed that spot a few times and worked the solution into his fur. Even though the skunk smell could still be smelled ever so slightly, I have to recommend this product, because the smell of skunk is SO STRONG!! But after treating the kitty with Thoitrol, I could tolerate having the poor kitty around again. I actually gave him a couple of treatments, to help rid the awful smell of skunk. Over the next couple of weeks, the smell eventually faded away. But the Thiotrol Spray made those 2 weeks bearable!! Without it, I would not have been able to let kitty in the house.
Description of Vet Solutions Thiotrol Skunk Odor Eliminator Spray 8 oz
"Specially formulated to neutralize, offensive skunk odor on pets, people, clothing, carpets and other surfaces. In order to get rid of skunk odor on pets, the thiols and thioacetates need to be either physically removed from the coat or chemically altered. Complete physical removal even with multiple baths will not completely remove skunk odor so it is necessary to chemically alter the compounds to completely remove skunk odor. One way this can be accomplished is via oxidation with agents such as hydrogen peroxide or bleach. These oxidizers may not be gentle enough to apply full strength to an animal and can change the hair color of a pet. Chelation is another way to chemically alter thiols. In the case of Thiotrol Shampoo and Spray, chelation is accomplished using zinc ricinoleate, a salt of ricinoleic acid. Ricinoleic acid is an unsaturated fatty acid derived from castor oil. It absorbs the thiols into its structure and binds to them, rendering them odorless. Thioacetates left behind are converted to thiols when water (either from the product or during bathing) is present. The resulting thiols are absorbed and bound by the zinc ricinoleate becoming odorless."Kitchen and Housewares
