Customer Review: A Modern Technical Marvel

I am a wine purist. I prefer real corks, glass bottles, and I open my wine with a waiter's key--the old fashioned way. But I take for granted that I have been naturally endowed with huge, strong hands. My girlfriend, alas, does not possess this gift. What to do? Originally I thought I could just open all the wine for her. When she threatened to buy one of those ugly, non-elegant electric corkscrews, I knew something had to be done.
The VacuVin Winemaster allows even small, weak-handed girls such as my girlfriend to open wine without so much as making a funny face. My family now has two of these, one of which we've possessed for over four years, with no problems. The VacuVin Winemaster is elegant. You can even see how it works through the little window in the side. It is reasonably-priced. It is effective. It is durable. It does not make whirring noises like those god-awful electric corkscrews pervading the market like so many sewer rats. Unlike the generic "screwpull"-type corkscrews sold in this venue, it is built with quality. Unlike the cheaper lever-type corkscrews, it will actually pull corks...all the way out...without punching a hole all the way through. Unlike the waiter's key, it requires no skill whatsoever to use. Unlike a true Screwpull corkscrew (those do work well, are durable, and require no skill), you can afford it. The only problem with this corkscrew is that it will not open some very large-flanged bottles. I've never met a bottle it can't open, but if you do, find a friend with strong hands and a waiter's key.

Vacu Vin 6649050 Corkscrew Winemaster TransparentIt's another wonder of modern technology from the folks at Vacu Vin: this corkscrew stands head and shoulders above any similar model. The tiny foil cutter stores in the top of the machine--just pop it out, squeeze gently over the top of the foil, and the foil falls right off. Next, insert the cork into the bottom of the WineMaster, with all four handles in the upright position. The corkscrew inserts itself when you pull the two smaller handles down, and you lift the cork by pulling the two larger handles. The last step: just raise all four handles again to pull out the cork--no yanking or twisting necessary! For the occasional extra-long cork, you may need to perform the steps twice--but this corkscrew's still far easier to use than most others. You'll want to open wine just as an excuse to show off this cool gadget. Tell guests they only get to play if they bring their own bottle! --Jill Lightner
