Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vacu Vin Pineapple Easy Slicer, set of 3 blade sizes.Customer Review: Love Pineapple, Hate to cut it Summary: 5 Stars
I have 3 kids who love pinapple and I live in S.California where it is available and affordable year around. I would dread buying it because of all the work involved with removing the peal and core. I saw this on "America's Test Kitchen" on PBS nd they also gave it high reviews. This tool makes it so easy! Cut off the top and bottom of the pinapple pick the size cutter, line it up on the core and twist. It will produce a lot of juice as you twist so make sure you work on a surface that will collect the juice or it will be very messy. It also works better if you can apply more downward pressure, you will get thicker slices. When you get to the bottom of the pineapple pull out the slicer, pop of the handle, invert and you have a beautiful pineapple spiral. Easy to cut into chunks or rings. The core can be a little hard to remove but I have had luck with pushing it out with the handle of a wooden spoon or spatula. Now that I have this slicer I have been buying pineapple weekly and my kids love it.
Customer Review: Works like a charm Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing a beautiful display of pineapples in the local market, I had the urge to see if I could find one of those metal gadgets I had previously seen in kitchen stores. I t looks kind of like a double hole saw. I couldn't find one locally, so, like I usually do, I turned to Amazon and found this interesting little device, plus it was on sale for *.**. I added it to another item and made the free shipping. When it arrived, I ran out out and picked up a pineapple, ran home with it, and immediately put the Easy Slicer to work. It works perfectly. When I later read some of the negative reviews, I had to imagine that some of these people are total ...all thumbs. This product does exactly what it is designed to do. Worth every dime of the * bucks it cost. Takes less than a minute to core an entire pineapple, no mess, no waste, and a 1/2 a glass of pineapple juice to boot. Don't hesitate to buy this little kitchen gadget. Sorry I hadn't known about it years ago.
Customer Review: Makes cutting a pineapple a breeze Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my slicer/corer for over 6 years now and it still works great. There have been one or two occasions where the pineapple "shredded", but it must have been related either to the ripeness or type of the fruit itself. The vast majority of uses have produced even, neat spirals with little or no mess. I brought some pineapple in to work today and a couple of my co-workers thought I had bought it pre-sliced!
Yes, there have been a couple times when it's been more difficult than others to pull the meat out of the shell, but again this has been rare. And I've never had any problem with the handle being loose. I find myself buying pineapples much more often now because they were such a pain to cut before I found this tool. You can also use the shell afterward as a decorative fruit bowl.
Maybe it doesn't work well on Hawaaian pineapples, but I guess that's a small price to pay for living in Hawaii!
Customer Review: I Wish I Had This Years Ago! Summary: 5 Stars
The last time I visited my mother she used this product. I was impressed but figured I didn't need any more gadgets in the kitchen. Then I started buying pineapples on sale and cutting them up at home. I forgot what a mess it was and how much time it took, even with the best of knives. I always end up with pineapple juice everywhere and bits of brown spots on the outside of my slices since I try to get the most out of the pineapple.
I had to order this and see for myself how easy it was to use it.
It arrived today and I had a pineapple cut and sliced in less than 30 seconds. You cut off the top, choose the slicer part that best fits the size of your pineapple (small, medium, large), center it on the core and start turning. It was easy to do and out came a perfectly cut pineapple with very little mess and no waste.
If you like fresh pineapple, forget the knives and cutting boards, this is the only way to go.
Customer Review: Good Product - A Bit Difficult to Use Summary: 5 Stars
I like this product, however slicing is more difficult than anticipated. Being plastic, you really have to put some force into it as you get down further. You'll feel like you've had a bit of a workout! The three different attachments come in handy for various sized fruits. One major plus is how easily the excess juice is to preserve. Also, if you're familiar with cutting pineapple I don't anticipate this contraption saving you too much time either.
Regarding texture: I don't care for the texture of these slices if I'm eating the pineapple plain, they end up being a tad thin and mashed up. I mainly use them in smoothies so it's not a problem.
EDIT:
I've found if I place the bottom of the pineapple in the sink drain and grip it while pushing down with the slicer, the fruit slices easier and thicker. Takes me about 30 seconds this way and the fuit comes out in one long spiral. Much better method.
