Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vacu Vin 4882350 Stainless Steel Pineapple Easy Slicer

Customer Review: Works. A bit wasteful and hard to clean.
Summary: 4 Stars

First, it works, is fun to use, and is a crowd pleaser. If you like slightly silly kitchen gadgets, this will do it for you.

On the down side, you probably get more pineapple out of your pineapple by peeling it with a knife. This tool will often leave a fairly think rind with lots of good fruit still in it.

Also the stainless steel version, at least, is a bit hard to clean. It is made of three riveted-together pieces of steel. It's well constructed, but there are cracks between the pieces that catch bits of pineapple fiber, which need to be picked out before you stick the thing in the dishwasher. I've never seen the plastic version and don't know if it has similar problems.

But, hey, it is fun to use. Enough fun that we've been buying a lot more pineapples than we used to, which is a good thing.

Customer Review: Far more useful than one would think!
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, get the stainless-steel one. I've seen the plastic one in action and its performance doesn't even compare. This one slices right through with half the effort.

You'd think that such an item would be a novelty but I find myself using it several times a month. I never buy pineapple in any processed form. It tastes far better and is super convenient to slice. It comes out in rings and is far juicier than when you slice it up fresh with a knife. The rings remain on the slicer as it comes out making it quite easy to make chunks.

The pineapple itself is preserved as a serving bowl but best of all is the significant amount of juice that remains inside. It is either a treat to drink or, my preference, makes a terrific addition to any fruit salad in the place of a sugar based syrup.

Customer Review: Got this some time ago and just had occasion to use it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I do like this very much. Beats just using a knife. My problem was that my pineapple was too long and big around for the unit, thus I had to do a lot of knife work afterwards or just throw whe "bowl" part away. There was too much good pineapple left to let that happen. I just cut it into smaller pieces then and cut the outside layer off. There is no way the unit is going to fit every pineapple being sold, so I don't know the answer unless you just get used to picking out a pineapple you know will work. In my case it would be shorter and smaller around, then everything would be great! It did cut down the time to prepare the fruit and was not as messy as when I have used just a knife. Also, as you are using the corer you get a lot of juice so I would suggest working over a bowl--I did not!!

Customer Review: Company Won't Stand Behind Poorly Manufactured Product
Summary: 1 Stars

(REAL NAME)
I used my Vacu Vin about three times before the handle broke off, and contacted the company through their website about a replacement handle. After two weeks I received no response and emailed them a second time.

This time I received a hasty response as follows, "I have responded back to you 2 weeks ago and told you that we do not have extra pineapple slicer handles nor do we offer a warranty on this item."

As far as the three times that I was able to use the slicer, it sometimes worked nicely, and sometimes mangled the pineapple. There was always a lot of wasted fruit with this device since it is made to accommodate smaller pineapples as well as larger.

Save your money on this uni-tasker and practice your knife skills.

Customer Review: steel pineapple slicer
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought the stainless steel pineapple slicer because I had been given the plastic model. The plastic slicer did a very nice job, but I knew it wasn't going to last very long. However, for some reason the steel version is smaller than the plastic model, and as a result, the core often isn't completely cut out, resulting in some tough pieces attached to each slice. Also, since it doesn't slice as wide a diameter as the plastic model, I am forced to manually trim the pineapple that the cutter failed to remove from the outer skin, in order to reduce waste. However, the steel slicer cuts much easier than the plastic model because it's edge is much sharper. I am very disappointed with the steel model, especially since it costs 2 1/2 times as much as the plastic model.
