Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Vacu Vin 4882350 Stainless Steel Pineapple Easy SlicerCustomer Review: A must have for people following weight watchers Summary: 5 Stars
A few weeks ago, another weight watchers member had recommended the vacu vin for coring pineapples. I had a balance in my amazon gift card account so I figured what the heck and ordered one. It arrived really quick. I didn't run out and buy a pineapple in order to use it, like I should have. Yesterday while in the local Ald's supermarket, pineapples were $1.69. I bought one, but I should have gotten two or three.
We used the vacu vin on a pineapple last night. It takes about 15 seconds to have a perfectly cored pineapple. It takes another 20 seconds for the whole family to devour the pineapple you just cored. Using a knife to core and cut a pineapple, the way I used to do it, takes several minutes!
Its simple, cut off the top of the pineapple, center the vacu on the pineapple and start turning clockwise. It screws into the pineapple, no pushing is required. When you get to the bottom of the pineapple, you can take the handle off the vacu vin and it releases the pineapple.
Since pineapple is a free item on weight watchers, my family will be getting a lot of use out of the vacu vin. If you purchase several pineapples a year, and struggle to get them cleaned up with the knife, then I highly reccommend the vacu vin, it is well worth the price.
Customer Review: Slices Pineapples a Bit Too Well Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this item to replace a plastic version of the pineapple slicer. The handle of my original slicer broke after about three years use. The stainless steel version uses the same handle, so it is probably the weakest item of the slicer and may also break in the future. The stainless steel slicer requires much less force than the plastic version to cut through the pineapple. However the center coring portion of the stainless steel version is so sharp, it doesn't necessarily follow the core of the pineapple to the bottom of the pineapple. The plastic version always centered on the pineapple core.
The stainless steel slicer produces thicker slices, which is a plus. However I was disappointed to find the diameter of the steel slicer smaller than that of the plastic version. This results in useable pineapple not being removed from the shell of the pineapple. I would have preferred having the steel slicer cut at the same diameter as the plastic version.
In summary, the Pineapple Easy Slicer Stainless Steel is a useful tool for coring and slicing fresh pineapple. It could have been even better if the diameter of the pineapple slicer were the same as that of the plastic version.
Customer Review: This thing is AWESOME. Summary: 5 Stars
We LOVE fresh pineapple, but I always dread actually having to clean one. I'd heard good things about this slicer, so I decided to give it a try. Ohmygosh, y'all- this thing is awesome. I'm a tiny bit drunk right now because the cute pineapple shell I was left with inspired me to make daiquiris. Anyway, it easily cut a perfect spiral, leaving the seeds in the pineapple "shell." After I pulled out the majority of the pineapple interior, I was able to stick the thing back in and get another rotation out of it. It did leave sort of thick walls on the pineapple shell, which I guess you might consider wasteful, but it made the shell sturdier to hold my drink and for the time it took, I'll sacrifice a bit of of the meat. Besides, I was able to get one rotation out of the "lid" of the pineapple, which I'd always just thrown out before, so I figure that makes up for it. Hardest part was getting the core out- it sticks up like a post in the center of the hollow shell when you're done.
After I was done, I rinsed the slicer off, used a toothpick to flick out a couple of little bits of pineapple fiber that had gotten caught, and tossed it in the dishwasher. I feel like I'm on vacation.
Customer Review: Finally! Fresh pineapple, even for a clutz like me! Summary: 5 Stars
This gadget is brilliant! I almost wrote it off as gimmicky, but between the stainless model and its plastic sibling, this little slicer had so many positive reviews that I decided to roll the dice. I've never cut my own fresh pineapple for fear of losing a finger. I'm a clutz. Sharp knife + angry fruit = bloodshed. I deemed pineapples too dangerous for me... until I got this slicer!
It's fast and easy to use - much easier, in fact, than I had anticipated. I thought there would be a good amount of pressure required to screw the slicer into the fruit, but that wasn't the case. Simple twisting did the trick. My slices came out perfectly! It literally takes about a minute to slice the whole pineapple.
The box mentions that this is the "medium" sized slicer, intended for pineapples in the 3-5 pound range. Any larger, and you'll end up with extra fruit left inside the pineapple shell after slicing.
The slicer did not come with instructions (gah!) so be sure to watch the little demo video on Amazon's product page. I also wrote up my first experience with the slicer, including photos:[...]I am so excited about this slicer! Viva la pineapple!
Customer Review: A neat gadget, with some flaws Summary: 3 Stars
I've always wondered how restaurants can cut perfect-looking slices of pineapple, and once I discovered these pineapple slicers, I immediately got one.
This slicer works well. Things I like about it are:
1. It's sharp - slices through pineapples easily without a hitch
2. The handle comes off, so that the stack of pineapple slices can be extracted easily when you're done
3. The diameter works for most pineapples that I usually buy
It does have a few annoyances though, among them:
1. The pineapple core gets stuck inside the cylinder. It's often hard to get it out.
2. The thing is made out of pieces of metal that are joined together. The problem is that the joints aren't completely smooth, so pulp can get stuck at the joints, and they are very hard to remove.
Overall, I think this is a good kitchen gadget that works well. However, if you like to buy big pineapples, a lot of it would be wasted. Like other slicers, this one only slices at a fixed diameter, and it's actually a little small, so that you likely won't find a pineapple for which this doesn't work...
