As of this morning, I liken buying new scales to embarking in a new relationship after you've been cheated on by a bad man. My bad man was an Escali 4420G postal scale (whose lack of virtue I've extolled in a different review).
First, the good news: the My Weigh Ultra-Ship 35 made a good first impression, arriving at my front door promptly, well-packaged and right on schedule. The second impression was equally bright, as I plugged the scale in yesterday morning, and the screen greeted me with the word, HELLO (How thoughtful of its maker to incorporate this little pleasantry into our dialogue!) followed by this cool blue light that illuminated my first perfectly calibrated weight. In dream bliss, I proceeded to weigh 5 more packages for shipping -- Ol' Blue Eyes flashing for each perfect reading. Now, for the bad news: Things came to a screeching halt last night. I turned the scale on and, just like before, and it read HELLO. But that was it. No reading, no Ol' Blue Eyes, no nothing. It wouldn't even turn off. I tried again, and again, unplugging it between tries. Sometimes the screen would read HELLO, and sometimes it stayed a blank. A few times, it flashed in rapid-fire succession all manner of madly flickering numbers and hieroglyphics. This morning, I tried again, and it again gave me the dead-end HELLO. A few more tries yielded some more hieroglyphics, followed by a simple: BYE. (How thoughtful of its maker to incorporate this little pleasantry into out dialogue!)
I consulted the official My Weigh manual, which advises that you should never use these scales near cell phones, cordless phones or, for that matter, near ANY electronic device. Yikes. My house is full of electronic devices. What to do? Perhaps I could run a really long extension cord out to the backyard shed and ... but wait, I also need to protect the scale from heat, sunlight and moisture. Um... maybe I can rig up an a/c window unit in the shed... but wait, I bet modern air conditioners have some sort of electronic wizardry incorporated into them. What to do? The manual also advised recalibration as a remedy for a scale gone haywire. Recalibration, however, requires "an accurate 10 kilogram weight AND 20 kilogram weight." A quick scan of my kitchen cabinets turned up nothing of that weight, so I googled and found out that 10 kilograms = 22.0462262 lbs, and 20 kilograms = 44.0924524 lbs. Perhaps I could put together a few gunnysacks full of canned goods and feathers that equal 22.0462262 lbs. and 44.0924524 lbs., so that I could recalibrate Ol' Blue Eyes. But, darn, I guess I'd need scales to do that. More good news: The good folks at the My Weigh Company state in their literature: "We understand that the worst type of scale to own is a broken scale." As such, their Lifetime 30-year Warranty ensures a replacement scale within 48 hours of receipt of said broken scale. Problem is, I threw all caution to the wind when I received the scale. Receipt? In the garbage. Original box? In the recycle bin. More good news: trash day is Thursday, which means the receipt is still out there, albeit likely soaked with all manner of yuk that's been simmering in 100-plus degree summer heat for the past week, which means that it reeks about as much as my enthusiasm for trusting in anything or any one right now.
Sure, they say they'll send me a new scale. But can I trust them? And, sure, the new scale might even arrive, and it might even work. But then what? I'll always be waiting for the other shoe to drop because, see, it's the collateral damage that gets you. Any old fool can recover from a broken heart. But how to gracefully (and without indulging too much of your newfound neurosis) carry those broken pieces into tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow....? I don't have the scales to prove it, but I bet that if you were to take all those broken pieces and throw them into a gunny sack, they'd be a little heavier than they were before. Which has everything to do with weariness over situations like this (which are rife in modern life), and nothing to do with the fact that, in these modern times, it's clearly impractical to design a scale that cannot be used near electronic devices. So -- barring the preferable recourse of a full refund for this ill-designed scale -- my only choice is to make whatever illogical concessions (anyone know where I can get a cheap lead shield to protect this machine from harmful electronic interference?) are necessary to maintaining a relationship with this inherently dysfunctional product. (Fade out Ol' Blue Eyes, "The record shows, I took the blows, and did My Weigh....")
A FOLLOW UP TO MY REVIEW OF 8/29/07 (Subtitled, "My Weigh or the High Way"). I returned my defective scale to the good folks at My Weigh on 8/30/07. Yesterday (9/18/07) I received my replacement. Not a bad turn-around. Not good, but not bad. I opened the package this morning, and -- while the scale *appears* factory fresh -- it'll take some good old fashioned mettle for me to find out if this scale works, since they neglected to include the power cord. *sigh* Oh, this modern life. Yeah, I know: They're only human; I'm only human; yada yada. I'm going to just let the box, and all negative energies associated with it, sit for a day or two, while I work all the heavy sighs out of my system. In the meantime, I'll keep using the $1 non-digital scales I found at the thrift store. They tend to weigh on the high side, but at least they don't go haywire and die when exposed to deadly cell phones and computers.
If not for the fact that I occasionally need to weigh heavier packages, which my non-digital scales don't accommodate -- plus the fact that I've already shelled out $29.99 for this scale + 10.99 shipping + 12.05 return shipping (and doesn't it seem like I deserve more than angst for my $52.93?) I'd just cut my losses and stick with the $1 thrift store scales. Granted, they didn't come with a return policy but, so far, that's not been an issue.
