Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of USB Data Cable For LG CU515, CU575, TRAX, CU720 ShineCustomer Review: Annoying to use, but works Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this with hesitation, after seeing the reviews that suggested it would only transfer data off a MicroSD card in the phone. However, after doing a lot of research, this isn't the case.
The cable came with a diskette containing drivers, which was encouraging. After installing the drivers, my Windows XP Pro SP3 recognized the phone as a USB device, but didn't recognize it as storage. I had heard about a free software called BitPim ([...]) that claims to be able to access phones' filesystems, so I downloaded and installed it and gave it a try.
I used a message board I found off Google on my AT&T LG Shine CU720, and had good results with this method:
1. Run "lg.exe" off the diskette.
2. Go to Menu > Settings > Connection > USB Connection Mode on your phone and set it to "Data Service".
2. Plug in your cell phone into a working USB port on your computer.
3. Download and install BitPim. The starting wizard should be set to "other CDMA device".
4. Click on "Find Phone" or Edit > Detect Phone. A popup window will come up and say that the "other CDMA device" was recognized.
5. Go to Edit > Settings and change "other CDMA device" to Verizon LG VX8700.
6. Select View > View Filesystem.
7. Open the filesystem and browse to "/LGAPP/Media/Images/Graphics" for camera images, and other folders for other files.
After doing this, it worked perfectly. The only con was that I couldn't mount the phone as a partition, but I can live without that. Hope this helped!
Customer Review: One Major Flaw... Summary: 3 Stars
Okay, so I have an LG Shine. And on that LG Shine I have about, oh lets say, 500 photos. So, I tried to be smart and read all of the reviews of the usb cable on this website. I waited about 3 days until it got here; very fast shipping in my book. It was easy to install. I can't tell you how many times I've bought things and them be hard to set up/install. I really like how you can transfer music and photos from your memory card.
But that's part of the major flaw...
It only transfers from your memory card. I received the memory card yesterday (which works just wonderfully!), so I was in good shape. But when I went to transfer the files about thirty minutes ago, I thought it was going to transfer *everything* to my computer. You can't even fathom how disappointed I was when I just saw the ten pictures from my memory card instead of the 500+ pics from my phone itself (before I got the memory card).
So, my big advice? If you're looking for a usb cable to transfer files from your memory card AND phone, don't buy this. However, if you already have most of your pictures saved on your memory card (unlike me), go ahead and buy it. It does a great job of transferring.
Overall, it's very nice. Easy installion, fast transfer, charges your phone as it's plugged into your computer. I just really wish it transferred my countless number of photos on my phone's memory.
Customer Review: Beware of what you can actually accomplish with LG Cu720 Shine with AT&T Summary: 4 Stars
The cord works fine. However, I could not achieve what I wanted to do, which is edit/synchronize the address book. This is basically AT&T's fault. It turns out some of the functionality of the phone is locked by AT&T. So, while other companies allow access to the address book, etc., that functionality is not available for many of us. With this cable, after downloading the USB drivers and hacking the device via BitPim program (LG electronics has listed this as a "Tips and Trick" document) I have managed to open the file structure, manipulate the files, and even copy images. However, to date, I have not found a way of editting the addressbook... This is not a problem with the cable but a problem with what you can get done. The cable otherwise works.
Update: The best use of this so far has been transferring photos off the phone to my PC. I can also use my laptop to charge the phone with this cable while on the road and avoid bringing the power supply. Definitely worth the price.
Customer Review: USB Data cable for LG Shine Summary: 5 Stars
I don't need to say it, but this is a very low price for the data cable. The cable was shipped quickly and arrived earlier than expected. The USB data cable works great with my LG Shine. I can transfer files and allow my phone to charge at the same time. If you want to transfer data safely to the LG Shine using the data cable, you need to get a MicroSD card. First, format the MicroSD card by putting the MicroSD card in the phone and going to Menu--> Settings-->(#) Reset Settings--> (2) Master Clear--> (2) Memory Card--> (1) Yes. Then go to Menu--> Settings--> (7) Connection --> (2) USB Connection Mode --> select (2) Mass Storage and just plug your USB cable in your computer and phone. It is possible, from what I have read, to use a program and use the phone under "Data Service" to edit the phone settings and add custom message tones and ringtones, however I have not messed with it.
Customer Review: You may or may not need this... Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this cable to sync my computer to my LG shine phone. My problem does not lie with the cable itself but the LG shine...
Unfortunately, one cannot download information directly onto the LG shine internal memory with this (or any) cable. One can only download pictures, data, etc. to a Micro SD card in the LG shine. So, you will need to purchase a Micro SD card to use this cable with a LG shine.
Luckily, the cable and SD cards are relatively inexpensive -- but it is a bit of a hassle not to have the ability to access/download directly to the LG shine's internal memory.
Other than that, the cable itself is perfectly fine and the customer service provided by Amazon and the supplier were excellent and timely.
