Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Trudeau Garlic Press, BlackCustomer Review: Works Summary: 4 Stars
How do you rate a garlic press? If it works, I guess. This one does. I see some specific negative comments, so I'll try to address those issues. First, it does the basic job. Put in unpealed cloves, press, and get pureed garlic out, leaving peals behind. I didn't find it to take any extraordinary pressure. You're putting a raw product with skin through tiny holes. You do have to squeeze. Get over it. I found it pretty easy to clean. Flip it around the other way, and tiny pegs push debris out of the tiny holes. Holding it under a running faucet when you're done with it seems to finish off the debris. I can't comment on the dishwasher leaving water under the handle grips, because I don't put my cooking tools in the evil dishwasher. Feels substantial, and I obviously can't say much about the comments that the hinge pin is weak unless and until mine breaks, which it hasn't.
A garlic press isn't an essential tool. It's just an easy way to reduce a few cloves to a fine puree for when you don't want palpable pieces to appear in the food. I can smash, skin, and dice a bunch of cloves more quickly and easily with the side of a knife and my fingers than with a press, so I don't use it constantly.
Customer Review: not so great Summary: 1 Stars
I've owned this style - self cleaning- garlic press for several years and needed a replacement when mine broke.. I should have marked down the manufacturer of the one I used to have before I threw it away, because the garlic press on this page is nowhere near as good. I'm very disappointed.
1. The metal seems poorly machined. A problem that I read about (but didn't pay enough attention to) in another review before buying.
2. Worse though is that the self-cleaning mechanism works very badly. There are too many too many holes in the press and the too many small plastic prongs that get pushed through those holes during cleaning. the result is lots of small clogged holes to clean the remnants of garlic from AND the need to scrub away to get the remnants of garlic off the plastic prongs. It literally takes more than twice as long to clean compared to a traditional press, which defeats the purpose of a self-cleaning press.
One other note. This is a large garlic press. you probably want something smaller if you mainly need to do a couple of cloves when you cook.
Customer Review: It works, but it's not great Summary: 4 Stars
My old enamel garlic press finally bit the dust. I spent months searching for a replacement but never found one even remotely similar. It was lightweight and easily minced the garlic through fairly large holes. I loved it!
I really wanted to love this one too, but I don't. It's quite heavy and you have to have a vice-like grip to squeeze the cloves. (I can barely squeeze it all the way, and I'm pretty strong.) It mostly just mashes the cloves and leaves you a wad of pulp. I do like the self-cleaning feature, but I'd rather have a press like my old one. I'll keep hunting.
OK, I wrote this ten months ago and have upgraded my rating from two stars to four. I do like this garlic press, mainly because of the large holes and the self-cleaning feature. I still don't like it as well as my old one, but it's a good press, for the most part. The main drawback is you have to be really strong to squeeze it all the way, so for older people this would not work.
Customer Review: A bit too big and not easy to clean Summary: 3 Stars
When America's Test Kitchen said this is their new favorite, besting their former fave Zyliss Susi DeLuxe Garlic Press, I had to try it. I love the Zyliss press, so I had high hopes for this one. I was let down. Yes, it is quite big, but it seems to be of much lower quality than the Zyliss. The material (plastic?) seems to be a little rough in the hopper. And although the cleaner being part of this one is a good idea, it seems it is hard to get all the little gunk out of the corners. I suppose the testers didn't look too closely at ease of cleaning. The overall size of this press is bigger than the Zyliss, so if you have small hands, or not a lot of grip strength, this one is not for you. I have almost always been able to fit a clove in the Zyliss, so unless you want or need a big hopper, no need for the extra room.
Customer Review: Well built but can be difficult to clean; Broken after 1 year Summary: 3 Stars
This press has some heft to it, which I like. I don't feel like I'm going to break it if I squeeze hard. Because I can put some more pressure on this press, I don't feel obligated to take the skin off the garlic before using this press. It seems to work fine this way, and it saves me some time.
I don't know if there is a garlic press which IS easy to clean, but it can sometimes be difficult to get residual garlic out of this one. Actually, leaving the skins on makes it easier for me to get most of this out since it mostly comes out with the skin.
UPDATE: After a year I finally broke this one. The metal that holds the pin finally snapped. Also, the rubber handle had started to slip off the handle which made it even more difficult to use. I have to buy a new press, but I won't be buying this one again. It was ok considering the price, but I'm going to see if I can find something better.
