I've been suffering from some pretty severe insomnia lately, no sooner would I fall asleep than something in the neighborhood would wake me up. I was getting tired, irritable, and just worn down. In a desperate attempt to get a good nights sleep I ran out and purchased some blackout curtians, and due to availability this sound system (I had wanted to purchase the Sound Oasis Sound Therapy system made by the same people, because it was cheaper but the only stores it was available in are bed bath & beyond and none of the local stores had them in stock).
So I hung the curtians, started the machine and went to sleep. I had a bit of a restless night (no fault of the machine), but when I woke up this morning I really felt much better than I had in weeks.
I wanted to share some of my experiances with others who may be looking to buy this machine or something equivilent.
1) If your looking for some way to block unwanted sounds with a machine like this, first evaluate which type of sounds you are trying to block. The machine will help block a number of various sounds, but any type of sound that has a lot of bass in it like a car door being slammed shut, or a vehicle with a really loud exhaust is not going to be blocked well by this machine. Perhaps if it had another 5 levels of loudness it could, but that's simply not the case.
2) Most of the other sleep settings on this machine "Celestial", "Rain" and "Summers Night" are great if your not trying to block out sounds. Otherwise they are pretty much useless, celestial might be better at blocking out noises with more bass, but it wouldn't do a good job on people talking, and other high pitched noises. Otherwise "White Noise" is the setting your looking for. And if it's the only setting your intrested in then you may want to look at the lower priced baby model of this machine.
3) Overall my first nights experiance with the machine was great. I didn't hear any looping in the sounds, however I will note that I think my brain sort of got used to the white noise setting and I began to hear other sounds during the night as part of the "White noise", one sounded like a beeping noise and then later I could have sworn I heard dogs barking (If I shut the machine off those noises would vanish so it's not something that was being covered up).
4) The light on this machine is brighter and more annoying than you'd imagine. I had a small black microfiber cloth I taped over the front to cover the face plate. If your room is pitch black in the evening I can almost gaurentee this machines light is going to drive you bonkers.
5) The volume capabilities of this machine are lacking, it needs to be right next to your bed for it to be of much use. Personally I would've liked the volume to go up another 5 or 10 settings as it would've helped block out more noises, and also would have allowed me to place the machine further away from my bed. Right now I've got the machine standing on the night stand and I turned the speaker towards my bed in order to get the maximum benefit out of the machine.
I'm happy with my purchase of this product, though my wallet is hurting a little. If a sound therapy machine isn't something your in a hurry to get your hands on look at alternate products like the sound oasis I mentioned earlier. Otherwise this is a good product to purchase, and if you want to save a few bucks and are only intrested in the white noise feature pick up the baby model of Tranquil Moments.
