Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tovolo Perfect Cube Ice Tray, Set of 2, Dark Blue

Customer Review: Nice shapes, but horrible flavor
Summary: 1 Stars

Like most of the negative reviewers of this product, I'm giving this ice cube tray a 1-star rating because of the terrible flavor it imparts to ice cubes. At first I thought it was just because the tray was new and hadn't been cleaned well. I was wrong. After cleaning it countless times, running it through the dishwasher, soaking it, etc, the ice still has the same plastic/chemical taste it did on the first day. Sure, it's easy to use and the shapes are nice, but that doesn't mean anything if the ice is inedible.

What I find most interesting are the reviewers who don't detect any off flavors. This makes me wonder if 1) some people just don't detect this flavor/smell or if the people who do are just hypersensitive to the compound causing the odors (maybe something similar to the biological basis of cilantro tasting like soap to some people), and 2) whether variations in the manufacturing process or sites may be involved.

Either way, be warned that you may detect plastic/chemical flavors from ice made in here. For whatever reason, some people do, and some don't; but if you do, don't expect it to go away with time or after cleaning.

Customer Review: How's Your Ice Cube Tray?
Summary: 1 Stars

I came across a reference to these particular trays in Eric Felten's book "How's Your Drink?: Cocktails, Culture, and the Art of Drinking Well," and I was intrigued enough to purchase them. After all, if you bothered finding this page, you, too, are probably tired of the same ol' crescent-shaped automatic ice wedges, or the default "hey, the trays came with the apartment" trapezoidal blocks -- or, like me, you were lulled in by the power of suggestion. Sadly, I should have read the customer reviews before buying my set.

Indeed, the ice forms into near-perfect, well-proportioned cubes (not too big for an old-fashioned, not too small for a highball). But it's a struggle to get the cubes out of the dang tray -- those of you accustomed to simply giving a quick twist to a standard ice cube try will be sorely disappointed. The tray's flexibility is its downfall -- no amount of twisting works. You actually have to push and pull each cube out, one-by-one.

To sum up: love the cubes, hate the effort.

Customer Review: Excellent Choice
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered these to use to freeze breastmilk and homemade babyfood. They have exceeded my expectations!

The first feature I enjoy is knowing the exact weight (1oz) of each cube. This takes the guess work out of figuring out how much I'm feeding my baby.

I love the flexibility of these too. Once filled and frozen, it makes emptying the trays much easier. I also like that the silicone does not hold scents. When I need to use these trays to freeze babyfood, I know that the peas will not absorb the taste of the squash we froze previously.

Another feature to note:I do not know if it was intended by the manufacture or a lucky conincidence, but the dimensions of the tray are conducive to not having to rearrange the freezer. It's a bit smaller than your average bag of frozen veggies, or containers I usually use to freeze leftovers. No trying to balance a long and skinny tray over multiple uneven items.

These have been invaluable as I continue to try my hand at homemade babyfood!

Customer Review: Form over function
Summary: 1 Stars

These things look really slick and create very nice looking ice cubes. But as far as practicality goes - they're a total strikeout.
- As the other poster said, there's no easy way to remove the ice cubes. As these trays are soft rubber, a flexible seal is created around each cube and flexing the tray doesn't eject them. You pretty much have to push each cube out through the back.
- The top of the tray and cube walls are all the same height, this means filling all the pockets and loading the trays into the fridge without spilling is a challenge.
- The trays are a non-slip surface, which means sliding them into the fridge also is annoying.

Yes, these are all nit-picky points, but when it comes to something as simple and utilitarian as an ice cube tray, when someone gets it wrong, it's that much more noticeable.

Customer Review: They work well for us
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a set of these from my local kitchen store a few months ago. They work great for my household of four 20-somethings. I love how easy it is to remove just one or two cubes at a time (perfect for when we just want enough ice for one drink), and that I no longer have to deal with an entire tray full of ice splattering all over the place.
The trays seem well-made. They're still in perfect condition after several months of constant and somewhat aggressive use, I think they'll last a long time.
My only concern with the product is the lack of rigidity when filling up the entire tray. It can be difficult to put in the freezer. But even this isn't much of a problem, because we generally only use 3-4 cubes at a time. One of us just refills the tray when it gets to be about 3/4 empty.
