Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Tom Douglas by Pinzon Epicurean 20-Inch Chef Magnetic Knife Holder, SlateCustomer Review: Even holds my Rada knife sharpener! Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My knife holder came packed in a large cardbord box with crumpled-up brown paper packaging. This should have been sufficient protection, but the heavy and much smaller (product-sized) box the holder came in had sunk to the bottom of the bigger box, which had been crushed during delivery. When I took out my magnetic knife holder, I was dismayed to find two places on the holder surface with deep whitish streaks and thought it was damaged beyond repair. But when I scrubbed the outer sleeve with a blue ScotchBrite pad and a little soap, the streaks came right off and the finish was flawless! The material the holder sleeve is made of is clearly very tough.
I spent a long time trying to figure out the best place to mount this knife holder. It is 20" long. The ideal place in my kitchen would have been over the stove, but I was afraid to put it there because I wasn't sure how the base (made of some kind of tough black plastic) would hold up to the heat...or if my knives would. (Too, I feared the awesome little bubble leveler on the base might burst.) This knife holder is a space-saver only if you are not putting anything on the counter in front of it, like cannisters or a toaster, that would get in the way of accessing the knives. I wound up rearranging my whole kitchen to create a dedicated cutting board/food prep area at the end of one counter, the one that doesn't have any electrical outlets. This area is clear across on the other side of the kitchen from the sink, which I thought I would not like, but it turns out it works even better than what I was doing before.
I have Rada knives with aluminum handles so, obviously, the handles will not stick to the knife holder. But the knife blades do and they are held securely. I was delighted to discover that my Rada Cutlery Quick Edge Knife Sharpener slides right onto the Pinzon knife holder and sticks securely thanks to the steel wheels on the sharpener. The edge of the little stand on the sharpener tucks neatly under the bottom edge of the holder with room to spare for a neat, flat, "matched" appearance. Now I'll always have my sharpener visible and at hand so I'm more likely to use it regularly. This is a major plus!
A word of caution: I almost mounted the knife holder so that a piece of molding would have prevented me from sliding off the sleeve for cleaning, so be sure you slide the outer sleeve off and on a few times from both directions to be sure you mount the holder so you'll be able to remove the sleeve.
I am quite pleased with this lovely knife holder, and my knives look great against the slate color of the holder. My kitchen is more efficiently organized and attractive now, too. I'm no longer dreading the garden produce hitting me like a ton of bricks, because now I'm ready for it.
