I purchased 8 of the hourglasses (2 of each color) and they kept my husband entertained for a week trying to see which one was the fastest. Some of them took 2½ minutes for the "sand" to reach the top and one hourglass took 5 minutes. There is an air bubble in each of them and sometimes the bubble blocks the way for the sand to pass through. You can simply tip the hourglass a bit to encourage the air bubble to pass and then the sand flows freely. In regards to the 8 I purchased, the blue colored ones flowed the slowest and the green ones were the fastest. I would suggest some supervision when allowing younger children to play with them because they would probably break if thrown a time or two, but they are sturdy enough that they won't break if dropped.
Hopefully the grandchildren will enjoy them as much as my husband and I have. I would recommend this product to others.
Description of Times Up Sand Timer - Blue
The Times Up Sand Timer is like a sand timer in reverse. Unlike ordinary sand timers, this liquid filled timer contains colorful micro-beads that "fall" up instead of down. It's great for timing those co-workers who talk on and on while you're trying to work. Give the sand timer a quick shake and flip it over to give co-workers a time limit on their visits. When all of the beads reach the top, the time is up. Then you can point to the timer and proudly state, "Time's up!" This timer is also useful during meetings and decision making sessions.
