Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan JMQ400 14-Ounce Leak-Proof Insulated Travel MugCustomer Review: Doesn't leak, keeps drinks hot, but lid is inconvenient Summary: 4 Stars
First, this mug is absolutely functional. It insulates very well (though not quite as well as Nissan's Backpack Bottle), keeping coffee warm for a few hours no problem. It doesn't leak. The handle is comfortable and easy to use. It fits in my car's cupholders.
However, the lid is, in my opinion, simply a poor design. You have to reach down into the mouth of the thermos, pinch the lid with your thumb and forefinger, and then try to twist to unscrew it (or screw it in tightly). This is a very difficult action - you can't grab around the outside of the lid to apply any leverage; it's all finger strength to remove the lid. And keep in mind - when you put in a hot liquid, and let it cool even a little, the air inside will contract, creating a tighter seal and making the lid even harder to remove. Also, as others have mentioned, the lid is two pieces - meaning it does come apart for cleaning, but also meaning you have to take it apart for a thorough cleaning.
Overall I'm happy with the mug, but I wish they would have thought a little more about the lid!
Customer Review: Just what I expected Summary: 4 Stars
I replaced my Nissan wide mouth mug for this travel mug and have not been disappointed. My wife was impressed as well so I bought her one too. We know whose is whose because mine has the dents from dropping it down a rock embankment. Still works great, and kept my coffee nice and hot.
Why not a perfect score? A couple of things. It is on the small side. 14 ounces of coffee just will not do for me. You can only fill to the bottom of the threads if you don't want overflow as you screw on the top. I personally overfill, close the lid all the way, and let that initial overflow cool a little for drink. Just need that first sip before hopping into the car or train. The rest I can drink at my leisure.
Second issue, really a non-issue unless I'm backpacking or something. The beverage won't stay as hot as my old wide-mouth mug. I guess that means 3 hours of heat as opposed to 6. The ad says 1 hour but there's still heat for quite a while. At least I can drink my coffee without getting fuzzy tongue all the time.
Customer Review: Best mug I've purchased (to date, anyway) Summary: 5 Stars
If I could have a dollar for every mug I've purchased, I'd have a nice 'stash' of cash! I've bought the expensive ones at the 'Premimum Coffee' stores (over priced, as usual), to mid range cost, and of course, even cheapO's.
This has to be the nicest one I've purchased. It keeps the coffee steaming hot for hours, AND is spill proof as stated. (If you're not a slob, and watch what you're doing).
There are special instructions for this unit that need to be read before you use it. You can't immerse it in water, for one. The 'open' drink mode is different, in that you have to turn the cap back one-half turn till the top lines itself (up and down), which feels a little weird, 'coz you get the feeling when you tip the cup up to drink, the top will fall off into your lap WITH the coffee, or it will, at least, leak like crazy. NOT TRUE.
If you knock it over on a seat, the handle keeps it from rolling off. Also, it will not leak if it is knocked over.
Nissan has done their 'homework' on this item. I can recommend it.
Customer Review: Best vacuum insolated mug I have used Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these 2 or 3 years ago, and both still work perfectly. Who should buy this mug? Someone who loves their coffee and is on the go. It is great for students on bicycles, or for cars with no cup holders, you name it.
Pros:
Leak proof if properly maintained
Excellent heat retention
With a key ring and carabiner you can attach to a pack
Cons:
Requires weekly cleaning of the rubber o-ring and inside of the lid
Rubber grip peeled off because I wouldn't stop playing with it
Bottom Line:
Best insulated mug I have used.
The leak proof nature of the mug is only kept if you keep the o-ring clean and the inside of the mug clean. The o-ring is stretchable, take it off to clean it. Also, the threaded lid is two pieces, remember to take it apart and clean inside weekly. Also don't fill it past the marked line on the inside or you will squeeze some fluid up around the lid. I will buy more of these if I ever lose mine, as they have held up well.
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
For those looking for a leak proof mug that keeps your coffee hot for a LONG time this one is for you. Here's some pro's and con's to consider.Pros: Coffee stays hot longer than any other mug I've tried. Since the top screws into the mug and has a rubber seal, it can be COMPLETELY leak proof. To drink, you just slightly unscrew the top. It can be clipped onto a backpack and it fits into cup holders which is great for the traveler. It has a handle which makes it easier to carry. It's easy to clean. Cons: Holds only 14 oz. I would prefer at least an 18 oz. Price is somewhat high. Overall, this mug is great but too bad it's only made in the 14 oz. size. I find myself overfilling it or choosing my cheaper plastic mug to use because it holds close to 20 oz. The pro's make the mug worth it but, for me, I gave it only 4 stars because of the size and the high price tag. I look forward to the day that Thermos makes this in an 18 oz. or 20 oz. size. Then it would be worth a 5 star rating.
